Hello all-

I'm interested in configuring and buying a BP/W setup. (I guess since it's a bouyancy compensator, and since BP/Ws aren't just for GUE divers, here is as good as any place to post.) Based on how I describe myself and requirements below, I would like to see if anyone can recommend a BP/W and accessory setup for me. Money's an object, but it's not such an object that I wouldn't mind spending a few hundred dollars to expirement. Note that I'm smart enough not to just buy a rig based on what you say here, but like doing my due dilligence before talking to a "real" person.

About me:

Approximately 60 dives since getting certified in January. 50 or so have been made in southern California wearing full 7mm setup and an AquaLung Balance BC. I'm rescue trained and am in the process of getting my divemaster cert. I'm certainly nowhere near the most experienced or skilled diver in the world, but I feel that my skills are solid. I dive primarily with divers who are less trained than I am, but not to th e point where I worry about them. Nevertheless, in an emergency, I'm going to be the one getting my friend to the surface or needing proper gear at hand.

My near term dive plans include deep (130-160fsw or so) and basic wreck training. "Technical" and long-period deco diving is a ways off, as are doubles. I want to be able to sling a 19 to 40cf bottle comfortably however, and need at least one pocket for my regular diving. Said pocket should be large enough to accomodate an extra mask and small backup light. In full cold water wetsuit gear with a floaty Al80, I might need 22 pounds of lead to stay down comfortably. In an emergency situation, I want enough lift in the wing to be able to get me and an out of air/unconscious buddy off the bottom (when all else fails, of course).

I am about 6'0 and 200 pounds, medium to athletic build. At maximum configuration I want to be able to clip off a reel, primary standard light or canister, slung bottle, and some other basic stuff. Steel and aluminum back cylinders both get used. Almost all diving will be in a wetsuit or crushed neoprene dry with no pockets on the suit.

I would prefer to err on the side of moderate price rather than either cheap or expensive.

So, anyone got good ideas for the harness, BP/W, and accessories?

dive-rite bp/w, you can configure it in anyway you want!!!! and add pockets and change the wings and so fourth, it took me a LOT of shopping before i found what suited me, the DR bp/w has it all!!!

I highly recommend Tobins gear from www.deepseasupply.com You cant go wrong with his gear and he is very friendly. Be sure to give him a call or shoot him a pm or email.

Edit: Just noticed you are from southern Ca. Give him a call and go see his gear in person. You wont be sorry.

I'll second the DSS plug. Call him or go see what he has. As for setting up your gear only you can determine what your needs are. Any pocket suggested here may be too big or small for you. Do you want it on your harness or on the plate. What about putting one on your suit. DSS has those now. I'm in the process of accessorizing my single tank rig that arrived two weeks ago. And even at this point with only two dives and one pool session the needs are different for each scenario. But the great thing is that I can add or subtract as needed.

I was going to recommend it anyway, but it looks like it's on special - so it might fail your 'not cheap' criteria.

I have the Thigh Pocket, linked below, as well as two 'Clipper' pockets for my weights. the Clipeer pockets are made to hold ~5 lbs. of weight, so you may want some other pockets for weight, or just go with the standard weight belt (which I'm actually on the way toward switching to) underneath the Hog harness.

Get a thich pocket in your hands before you order one to make sure it's big enough for whatever mask and items you want to carry. I think it may be large enough.

I don't like the DR Transpac, but if they still make it, I don't see much wrong with the TransPlate system.

From what I've read and heard, one activity 'tech' divers who are recommending gear forget to take into account is if the new-to-BP/W diver is going to be doing a lot of shore dives. I only say this because it seems like that's all I've been doing lately. I have a Hogarthian harness, but on those shore dives, especially the 'work to get to locations', I sure wouldn't mid the padding over the shoulders of the TransPlate system.

The DR BP is a good one, but better can be had (better, imho, meaning the webbing slots are rounded more - I know Halcyon BP's are nice and smooth) - but you can take a dremel to smooth out the DR if you want to.

Lastly, I've become quite used to my RecWing for singles (AL80's up to LP120's). There is a cinch-strap hidden up inside the wing that holds it tighter to the body for singles (I adjusted mine much tighter than it originally came) or, loose, would allow it to spread to its full capacity for what DR claims will be good for 'small doubles.'
I'm still waiting to test what that means...

If you go with a DR wing, like from NESS, ask for the shorter (DIR length) inflator hose. DR wings, from what I can tell, still come with some dumb-*** firehose-length inflator hoses, forcing the buyer to replace it if the shop didn't already. But for the price, I guess buying an inflator hose ain't that bad.

Best,

MD

Edit: fwiw, I do not beleive Dive Rite has the best BP/W's out there, but based on what aphelion said he wanted, DR may fit the bill in price and reliability.

I like deepseasupply.com and www.oxycheq.com. I went with a hammerhead B/P but my next one will most likely be DSS. For singles wings Oxycheqs Mach V and DSS Torus both would be good choices IMO.

Lotsa good plugs on DSS and I would agree. I have both a single LCD30 and a Tourus 45 wing. Go with the pocket on your wetsuit thigh or get yourself a pair of x-shorts. The pockets on your BC is so 1990's...

I dive in cold great lakes waters with a shell dry suit, st 95, slung al40, reel, etc. I use a ss dive rite plate and a rec wing. I use 2 xs scuba weight pockets with 10 lbs of weight on the top cam band, (5lbs/side) and a belt with 6lbs (3/side). I find this set up to work great, and have no issues witb trapped air, or tacoing. I am fairly new to the bp/w and really like it.
