...the spool spinning freely in the water...
If I let loose of it, it goes up with the bag and doesn't come back. As I said - it doesn't seem to be snagging or hanging up, but will "float" with slack line above it and a mostly deflated bag. If I hold it loosely between my fingers (not sticking them in the holes), it works fine. If it spins out of my hand or I let go, it's outa there. Is it too light (It's a dive rite, BTW)? I do soak it with the rest of my gear when I'm done, so shouldn't be get salt crystals.

Snowbear...have you tried unwinding the entire thing and rewrapping it when it is dry? I have no idea why yours isn't working. I've never had a problem with mine "sticking"...it just dances. ??

In fact, Uncle Pug unwound it in the parking lot the day after it happened the first time and agreed that it didn't seem to be sticking. Since then, I re-wound it with new line since it only had 50' and I wanted 100'. It seems to unroll smoothly every time, just those couple of times when I accidentally let go it went up. I should mention, it was still unrolling when it ascended, but stopped rather than coming back down to me. The line above the spool was quite slack with S-curves in it each time (I'm thinking because the bag popped up and mostly deflated?)

He's unhooking and rehooking his drysuit inflator hose to fill the bag. It only takes a second to do.

That only works with a bag that has an "inflator hose" fill on it (e.g. CC bag); for an OC one I usually switch to my backup and fill the bag with my long hose.
I think launching a bag with the spool spinning freely in the water is one of the absolutely coolest things to see. It is just really neat. If you have the opportunity to show someone who has never seen it done before, definitely do it...but it can cause mask leaks from the grin lines.

When it works, yes. :D

You can also inflate the bag orally instead of using the drysuit inflator. I did this when I got really frustrated with the inflator mechanism not working...I found out on land...it was just a defective user again...:D It worked much better next time.

I missed that. Your dive rite must be too light.

A Halcyon spool will not *float there* ... if you don't clip it off to the line it will continue to unroll as it sinks! I have had my Hakcyon spool move up a foot or two but never far and most of the time it just spins there in front of me.

Shane has a Canadian Exteme spool and it is a touch lighter and will move up more but still rolls back down reliably.

Yeah, you can fill it from the backup too, if you're careful so as not to get tangled up in things when doing it. Sometimes I will fill from the backup but only in conditions where I'm sure I won't get fouled.

The thing a lot of people miss is that it does NOT take much air to start it up. Overfilling it is dangerous as it will start to drag you.

When filling the bag it is very important to keep from getting tangled in it somehow and taking a ride to the surface.

That is one reason why I personally prefer to use the CC bag inflated with my drysuit inflator hose. I hold the bag and the inflator valve and the spool without any loose line in my right hand while pushing the inflator hose with my left hand onto the bag's inflator valve to put gas in it.

While doing so I begin to incline myself slightly head down finning as necessary to counter act the additional buoyancy. When I have enough gas in the bag I hold the bag and reel away from my body... check to see that both by buddy and myself are clear and then let it all go.

The bag goes up and the spool stays right there spinning furiously.

When the spool stops spinning and begins to unroll and sink I reach out and with the double ender clip the line off to a hole.
