Their Tech support line is in Edmonton.
Or it will be. They have been trying to hire lots of people...but very cheap wages.

I don't care for Dell either. I was an all Dell shop and they were just a pain to deal with. Don't get me wrong, they all suck, but Dell is at the bottom IMO. The reason so many companies use Dell is because they are cheap. They are fairly efficient at purchasing and putting together computers, but their support hasn't been that good. I prefer Compaq (the business ones, not the crappy home ones). The Evo line in particular.

Dell will build to your specifications. If you go really really low end with the bare minimum integrated sound cards, integrated video cards etc, perfromance will suffer a bit. But if you spend a little more and specify the cards and accessories you want, you will end up with a solid performing machine. I bought an 8200 two years ago and have bene more than pleased with it - a lot more so than the series of Gateway computers that have been forced upon me at work.

For a while Dell seemed to be reorganinzing their tech support division and support was really hard to get, but that was awhile ago and most reports of poor tech support are I suspect not an accurate reflection of the current situation. Dell offers great warranty coverage and local service support in most areas.

Dell has some pretty good deals on computers these days and Its time I upgraded mine. I don't want to build my own, I just want to buy it outright. The problem is that I've heard Dell just buys a bunch of crappy componants and throws them together. I've heard some say they'd never buy one.

Anybody have any experiences with them?

I take care of about 20 of them at work, but I don't use one for my workstation. The integrated graphics models are slow. If you buy a Dell be sure and get a model with an ATI video card.

Dell uses proprietary parts; I learned this the hard way. The ATX connector on the PS and the motherboard will not work with other motherboards and power supplies. You can connect a third party PS to you dell motherboard and fry it. Instead of spending $45.00 for a new PS, you'll spend $145.00 for one from Dell. You probably will not be able to upgrade the motherboard.

The older Dell Optiplexes were made to last and built like tanks. The latest Dells are no better or worse than Compaq/HP. Neither are reliable as an IBM which we use to run our webserver.

I worked LAN/Desktop Support at a Fortune 500 company, the campus I worked at had over 2,500 people at it. There were 6 guys plus me working the whole campus. Had a hell of a time keeping up with all the HP/Compaq's that went haywire on us. We finally convinced the "higher-ups" to start buying Dell. Our workload decreased drastically and they actually ended up downsizing the number of LAN guys we had. I was one of the ones who got laid off. :censored:

I highly recommend Dell computers. However, if you have the time/knowledge to build your own. It's an experience and you can support yourself.

Oh and Mark.. The Evo line was the bottom of the barrel for Compaq. We had them replace over 1,000 laptops due to overheating, they could not argue with us.

I just recently bought a Dell laptop, and I LOVE it. My previous computer SUCKED... never again will I buy "that brand." Dell has won my business... and my experience with their tech support has been wonderful!
