One thing that used to drive me crazy was Tobin and his minions over complicating wing lift requirements and scare new divers that if their wing was too large they would have too much drag and not be able to vent properly. Before BP/W came into vogue, most divers only had one BC which had more lift than a typical wing and used that wherever they dove.

I don't know if it is a residual effect of what you mention above or not but there seems to be an over-preoccupation with folks wanting to minimize the size of their wing....the idea of spending an extra 200+ clams on an 18lb wing that is not really significantly smaller in packed dimension or weight than say 23lb wing is quite amusing to me...especially the justifications used...more streamlined, every ounce counts for packing, etc, etc, etc.

I know. Some people are agonizing over whether they should get a 23 or 18 when the wings are only slightly larger. Unless you are as sensitive as the "Princess and the Pea" you are never going to notice it. When in doubt get a little more than a little less.

Agree completely.

I see very little difference between 18lb and 23/25lb wings and very little difference between 23lb and 30/32lb wings.

We have 32lb and 23lb wings in the family arsenal....the visual difference, the weight difference, and the pack-ability difference is really minute between them. The only major difference is that one of our Dive Rite wings is made with their XT superfabric....there is a weight and pack-ability penalty with this wing compared to the others but even that is not significant, especially considering the extra durability and life-time guarantee it comes with.

Some wings are more flexible than others. For example, Oxycheq coats their shell with urethane to make it stronger but it also makes it harder to pack. Hollis used to do the same, not sure if they still do. That is actually why a purchased a DSS wing. I wanted something more pack-able. I had a Halcyon but it was too expensive to travel with. I was afraid it would be stolen. BTW, the STA is a non-issue I just flipped it upside down and attached it to the plate. Took up no space at all.

I don't fault people looking for pack-ability because the airlines are getting strict, especially the Asian ones. The ideal is to be able to fit everything in a carry-on. The fins are always the sticking point.

Good info...I continue to learn every time I log-on to SB.
