One thing that used to drive me crazy was Tobin and his minions over complicating wing lift requirements and scare new divers that if their wing was too large they would have too much drag and not be able to vent properly. Before BP/W came into vogue, most divers only had one BC which had more lift than a typical wing and used that wherever they dove.
I don't know if it is a residual effect of what you mention above or not but there seems to be an over-preoccupation with folks wanting to minimize the size of their wing....the idea of spending an extra 200+ clams on an 18lb wing that is not really significantly smaller in packed dimension or weight than say 23lb wing is quite amusing to me...especially the justifications used...more streamlined, every ounce counts for packing, etc, etc, etc.
