Failed, no. It displayed information in a non-intuitive way.
When he was looking at the screen it was displaying deco information for a gas he was breathing, but he had not confirmed the switch, so the computer continued to calculate deco info for the last confirmed gas, his backgas. His BG was a tri-mix ratio unknown to me. I got this in the post-dive post-morteum.
The big problem was that the diver did not know that his computer could display a time function other than 1:1. Also, the diver did not trust himself enough to ignore the electronic device when he had emptied a 50% O2 cylinder at 10 feet.
My observation was that an otherwise competent diver let his computer lead him astray from his planned dive.
