Hi everyone,

I'm curious on getting some of your toughs in regards of the Dan insurance. This will be my 3rd year of diving, I'm pretty careful and do very conservative dive profile. I'm obviously not concern about the diving back home since our provincial medical covers everything if something would happen but its more about when I go down south.

I go south once a year and again I do safe dive profile, like 1 dive per day, 60 feet 50 minutes or so. I know I'm probably short changing myself but unfortunately I don't want to go deeper since I really don't trust the buddies I'm assign with.

They are always vacation divers with barely any dive experience. I have 70 dives and I don't consider myself an experience one, but at least I practice the sport back home. So my question, knowing that I do conservative dives is it worth it spending money on Dan insurance?

Thanks,
Dan
DAN == No
Insurance == Yes

You have raised multiple topics:
1) do I need scuba specific insurance
2) who should I buy it from

I claim it makes sense to carry scuba specific insurance protection when traveling on a scuba vacation. Chamber rides are not cheap.

But Dan is not the only choice when purchasing scuba travel insurance.

That said, Dan also provides (promotes?) dive accident related research.

Yes. We've been on the family plan for several years now. Pretty much the only insurance I don't mind paying.

I like the DiveAssure plan over the DAN. You might want look at both.

I will look into that one also and compare. I will definitely get insure before I leave for Mexico in May. Better have it then not....

Wouldn't leave home without it... or even dive locally without it. 50 years and thousands of dives and I've never needed it, but if I ever do....

DAN insurance is like wearing a seat belt. You really don't need it unless there is an emergency and then your going to be grateful you had it on. I am the only diver in my family. We have very good health insurance but I carry the plan for the entire family(extra on me). It's very reasonable for what it will offer if an emergency occurs!

OK, so you promote having dive insurance and specifically say "No" to DAN.

What other insurance are you recommending over DAN and why?

Would you mind pointing out your reasons why? While I notice that DiveAssure plans all have no depth limit, unlike DAN's standard plan which has one, DiveAssure's fine print is much more restrictive than DAN's (at least for the US).

In the event of an accident, I don't want to make scuba diving accident claim on my primary health insurance, which I would have to do since the DAN coverage is secondary. I also get more Insurance for my money vs joining DAN and buying their's.

Maybe I don't need a DAN membership and maybe I don't want to make scuba diving accident claim on my primary health insurance, which I would have to do since the DAN coverage is secondary.
DAN dive insurance does require DAN membership, but the actual costs are competitive.

Have you read the Description of coverage closely? Last page Exclusions include "Expenses to the extent that they are paid or payable under other valid and collectible group insurance or medical prepayment plan;" which in effect makes them Secondary! You don't get to avoid claiming on your medical insurance.

And Dr. Lecter pointed out some very interesting requirements and limits above for any coverage as well.

One thing that most divers, myself included, almost always overlook is that DAN is not dive insurance. It is an accident insurance. If you have an accident outside the home mileage limits, whether it is mountain climbing, bicycle riding, snowboarding, etc. DAN's evacuation plan will kick in and can be a life saver. Check out a number of sources and make your decision. In Canada, I am not sure if the plans are the same or if you will even need the coverages. If you ever go to the Carribean and dive you will definitely need it.
