My GF and i have just signed up with DAN for the master plan and i was wondering what level others have taken out and why. I thought for the price that the level of coverage and limits were reasonable.

I'm a new diver, but the difference between Standard and Master seemed a no-brainer given the small difference in cost. I've since found out that the volunteer diver program at the local aquarium requires DAN Master coverage or better.

In addition to up to $250,00 per incident, death/dismemberment/disability coverage & generous reimbursement benefits for dive gear lost or damaged as a result of dive injury, Preferred has a $10,000 lifetime maximum benefit for medical non-dive accidents occurring outside of the country of permanent residence & trip cancellation/interruption coverage for many of the losses incurred when an insured's ability to dive becomes substantially limited due to personal sickness or injury.

Keeping in mind that the difference in cost between Preferred & Master is $35 a year:

Preferred gives you $10,000 medical non-dive accident coverage, $10,000 vacation cancellation coverage, $5,000 vacation interruption benefits, and $250,000 per occurrence medical dive accident coverage.

Master gives you no medical non-dive accident coverage, no vacation cancellation coverage, no vacation interruption benefits & only a $125,000 lifetime maximum medical dive accident coverage.

As such, if while on a dive trip you sustained injuries in a motor vehicle accident in a foreign country that resulted in your having to extend your vacation by just one day, with Master you'd not only have to prove medical coverage/pay medical costs up front without DAN assistance, but also the charges for changing your flight(s) & an additional night's lodging & food would far exceed $35. Or, if you had to return home early (if air evac is needed, best have at least a $10k credit card limit), all prepaid portions of your trip would likely be forfeit. Imagine what could mean if you were on the first day of trip to Papua New Guinea or the like, or if the accident occurred the day before you were to depart on such travel. Even a cancelled/interrupted prepaid dive trip to the Florida Keys would make this coverage a godsend.

Also, if you haven't received serious medical attention recently, let me assure you that the costs can be astronomical. If you should sustain an AGE or Type II DCS with permanent residuals requiring long-term care, you could exhaust your health carrier's coverage & Master limits and/or pay substantial out-of-pocket expenses along the way. The DAN $250k per occurrence medical dive accident coverage would provide a nice cushion.

Think about it.

yup, Preferred was the way to go for me

I tend to routinely exceed the recreational limits so I opted for the preferred plan.

Wife & I picked Dive Assure Platinum.

Liked the high coverage for air ambulancec to return home as well as the medical coverage. The coverage for a medically cancelled trip, and gear, was nice too.

All the best, James

Only the Standard plan carries a planned maximum depth limit (130ft/40mtr).

Neither the Preferred nor Master plans have a depth limit.

Best regards.

Remember the "stamp"/national insurance you pay, plus more VAT/sales tax and mostly lower wages (at least in my profession), kind of evens up somewhat. Also not sure when the healthcare system (and pensions) will fall out and become too expensive for the UK taxpayers - like they are thinking here for the pensions over here as well. Just a thought from you local friendly ex-pat in US.

Any level of DAN is recommended. I have the Preferred and will keep it so. I had to use my DAN insurance last February. None of it was barotrauma related. Had to have emergency treatment in Bay Islands Honduras--couldn't fly for a few days because of nitrogen load and possible hemmoraging. Had to take ferry and real long taxi ride to San Pedro Sula where I caught a flight to Houston where I had major surgery two days later. I cannot say enought good things about DAN insurance. You may have to pull out a credit card, as I did, but they paid as billed. Hope I never have to use them again. Barotrauma or otherwise.

Regards,
