Hit the gym and do some lifting with you calfs. Worked for me.

Amazing what exercise will do nowadays.

Americans don't want to hear that. They want to hear all about some fad diet the eschews bread or involves wearing slimming pants or is named after some place near Miami. The level of laziness and fat slobbery in this country is absolutely ridiculous, IMHO.

So is Pamprin a diet pill?

Come on O-ring. If divers hear that it will make them more comfortable or safer in the water, of course they will exercise!! Why would they dive again before they could improve their fitness and reduce their risk while enjoying this sport??

What are you so worked up about. Diving is easy and anyone can learn how to do it in a weekend or two.

Cornfed, I think we are getting off topic. I'd really like to chat more about my cramps!

Let's not stray too far from the question at hand.

Leg cramps while diving.

Hydration and vitamin and electrolyte balance is important as is physical conditioning. While working out in the gym will help you will still need some time kicking your fins.

Kicking fins is different from just about anything else that you do with your body so it will help a lot to get in the water and swim with the fins as much as you can.

It is also helpfull to learn and use a wide variety of kicks so that you keep changing the way the muscles are being stressed.

The grab the fin tip streach is good to clear a cramp in the water. Then use a different kick so that you don't just cramp right back up again.

Here are my recommendations for those complaining of leg cramps while diving:

Stretch & warm up foot & leg muscles prior to diving.

Wear adequate thermal protection, especially on the legs & feet.

When touching bottom, rest your feet in a comfortable position making sure that they are not hyperextended.

Swim regularly with fins to condition foot & leg muscles.

Don't wear fins that strain leg muscles such as very long and/or very stiff fins.

Vary your kick style during the course of a dive.

Stay very well hydrated and drink reasonable amounts of sports drinks designed to sustain electrolyte balance.

Eat a diet rich in potassium, magnesium & calcium, or take an appropriate combination supplement in sensible amounts. [Calcium alone typically is not the answer]

This is educational only and does not constitute or imply a doctor-patient relationship. It is not medical advice to you or any other individual, and should not be construed as such.

Best regards.

Stupid newbie question - I too have a leg and foot cramp problem; is the frog kick exactly what it sounds like (the leg part of breast stroke?) I have been meaning to try it, but thought I should ask before I cause mask leaks by doing something silly...

Thanks, Christine
