Does anyone know if there is a direct ferry ride from Coz to Isla Mujeres?

A friend of mine just took a position as a dive instructor on Isla and wants me to stop by to see him while I'm Cozumel in December. He claims that there is a direct ferry route between Coz and Isla Mujeres.

I can't seem to find anything that can confirm or deny his claim on the web or on ScubaBoard so I thought I'd ask the group.

Thanks in advance.

Not that I'm aware of.....

I'm pretty sure he is mistaken. There is a ferry to Playa del Carmen from Cozumel but then it's a 30 or so mile trek overland to Cancun and then another ferry to Isla. I'd count on 3-4 hours each way.

Have him provide the website that shows the schedule. That is a route that would likely not be profitable for multiple reasons.

Ask your friend.

Nope, or I would have taken it when I did the trip earlier this year. I had to ferry to Playa del Carmen, bus to Cancun, taxi to ferry terminal to Isla Mujeres. And everything in reverse on the way home. As ggunn said, it's about a 3 hour trip each way if you make your ferry connections in a timely way.

I wonder if he is confused about the 2nd ferry that goes to Isla Mujeres...which leaves from the Cancun tourist hotel zone???

As noted, a Ferry directly from Cozumel to Isla Mujeres would have a very hard time making ends meet. First, there is the issue of limited demand - I can't imagine that it could fill a boat up every day, or even every week. Second, but more important, the fuel costs would be prohibitive. Sure, going from Cozumel to Isla Mujeres, the Ferry would be going with the current, but returning to Cozumel would require fighting a strong current for more than 40 miles, and using up a lot of very expensive fuel in the process. Just not an economically viable proposition.

Cozumel used to have a ferry that went to Cancun. It was a hydrofoil (we called it an aliscafo). Actually, there were two of them, but only one was ever running regularly. They bought the first one in Italy in 1980 then another in 1982 and brought them over on the deck of a special transport ship with cranes that lifted them off the deck and set them in the water. I rode it a few times. Fast, cheap, but loud and the spray would cover the windows so you couldn't see anything. They eventually shipped them back to Italy because they were too hard to maintain.

I guess they were made by Fiat!
