I guess they were made by Fiat!

No, they were each powered by two, supercharged 1,950 hp MTU diesel engines. MTU is Motoren und Turbinen-Union Friedrichshafen GmbH. The company was founded in 1909 Wilhelm Maybach and his son, Karl Maybach. Wilhelm was the technical director of Daimler. Later the company became Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH. In 1966 it merged with Mercedes-Benz and changed its name to MTU.

I don't think the problem was to quality of the engines, it was most likely the lack of proper maintenance and spare parts.

I can only imagine trying to fund the 'care and feeding' of those expensive German engines on a 3rd world county's budget, not a well thought out project.

Cozumel used to have a ferry that went to Cancun. It was a hydrofoil (we called it an aliscafo). Actually, there were two of them, but only one was ever running regularly. They bought the first one in Italy in 1980 then another in 1982 and brought them over on the deck of a special transport ship with cranes that lifted them off the deck and set them in the water. I rode it a few times. Fast, cheap, but loud and the spray would cover the windows so you couldn't see anything. They eventually shipped them back to Italy because they were too hard to maintain.

Wow, that brings back memories. I was staying in Cancun in the early 80's (before I was a diver), and took a side-trip to Cozumel on one of them. I think they departed from a pier at the Northern tip of the hotel zone, right?

No, they had a 12 foot draft when not on plane. Needed a deeper dock than those in the Zona Hotelera Norte.

No there definitely is not.

There is a ferry from Isla to Cancun and a ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel and vice versa.

To get to Isla from CZM - your commute would look like this:

  1. Ferry from CZM to PDC (30 - 45 minutes depending on weather)
  2. Bus, taxi or rental car from PDC to CUN ferry terminal (Gran Puerto or Punta Sam) (1 hour minimum)
  3. Ferry from CUN to Isla - (15 - 20 minutes)
OR
  1. Maya Air from CZM to CUN
  2. Taxi from CUN airport to CUN ferry pier (Gran Puerto or Punta Sam)
  3. Ferry from CUN to Isla

Either way, you are looking at a several hour commute from CZM to Isla Mujeres - best case would be 3 hours each way if all the stars aligned with transition times between transport options - could take as long as 6 hours depending on what you decide and schedules. 1st option would actually be the quicker and more economical way to go due to flight schedules, cost of the flight, and cost of getting from the airport to the ferry pier in CUN

Does anyone know if there is a direct ferry ride from Coz to Isla Mujeres?

A friend of mine just took a position as a dive instructor on Isla and wants me to stop by to see him while I'm Cozumel in December. He claims that there is a direct ferry route between Coz and Isla Mujeres.

I can't seem to find anything that can confirm or deny his claim on the web or on ScubaBoard so I thought I'd ask the group.

Thanks in advance.

You know that Fiat and Ferrari are the same company, right? :D

With similar maintainance required.

NO. For sure. There are no ferries going from Cozumel to Isla Mujeres or to Cancun for that matter. He is mistaken.
If there was one, everyone here would be talking about it.
:) Maybe one day. But not yet.

Certainly there is just ask any taxi driver to take you to the ferry port there are two actually depending what is closer to you. Underwater statues are cool

No Buck - there is not a ferry from Cozumel to Isla Mujeres. There is a ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen and from Cancun to Isla Mujeres.

I have been a full time island resident for coming up on 15 years. JenLovesToDive has been a full time island resident for at least 5 years - so we do know of what we speak on this topic.
