I think they departed from a pier at the Northern tip of the hotel zone, right?
They boarded passengers at the old Fidecomiso pier. Below is a (fuzzy) image of one of the aliscafos approaching the pier. That was back in the days before Punta Langosta pier and when the best dentist on Cozumel (Luis Erives) was the Punta Langosta lighthouse keeper. The big, white blob in front of the light house and just to the left on the shore was the La Langosta Restaurant, after they cemented over the thatched roof. Notice the beach in front of the Post Office. The Fidecomiso del Caribe building is on the shore to the far right.

Got a favor to ask: Will any folks who read (and liked) my newest book, The True History of Cozumel, please leave a short (one or two lines is fine) review on Amzon.com?

I finished the Spanish version recently and am now on chapter 5 with the Spanish "polishing" editor. Hope to have the Spanish version out soon.

If you haven't read it, you ought to. We know everyone who becomes a Cozaholic loves to show off their Coz knowledge. For that this book is REQUIRED.

"No, no, no. That is where the first Catholic Church was"

or

"Actually it was the slave trade"

and other things like that you can drop in a conversation. Seriously I really liked the book and gave it and give it a stellar review!!

No, they had a 12 foot draft when not on plane. Needed a deeper dock than those in the Zona Hotelera Norte.

I was referring to where they departed in Cancun, are we talking about the same location? Back then, the North Hotel Zone on Cozumel (again, I memory serves me right), was not very well developed.

No. The pier I showed and wrote about was at Punta Langosta in Cozumel. Back then the North Hotel Zone in Cozumel had a good number of hotels, but no deep water piers.

I knew that about Cozumel, I was just trying to remember where it left Cancun from.

Thanks!

Sorry, I misunderstood. The aliscafo left Cancun from the Playa Caracol aliscafo pier. Below is an image (again, blurry) of the pier in 1984. The image below that, is the same area 14 years earlier, in 1970.

That's what I thought I remembered, from the very Northern tip of the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Thanks!
