We were in Isla on monday (8/2). We did the whale shark snorkel through searious diving (Whale Sharks Tours on Isla Mujeres Mexico). There were hundreds of the sharks up on the surface. The vis was good but it really did not matter as they stayed near the surface. There were 8 people in our boat. We had to wear either a life jacket or wetsuit. We went in with the guide in 2's. Each pair stayed in about 10 minutes at a time and went in 3-4 times. The sharks swam right up to and by us. I got bumped twice and our boat was bumped a few times. There were 5-6 other boats there but it really did not matter because there were so many sharks. Our guide did not feel that the season had peaked yet. He thinks there will be even more in a few weeks and into sept. It was an awesome experience.
We stayed 2 nights in Isla. I am glad we stayed but don't really care about staying on the island again. It was very crowded. I do think it might be better when the mexican kids go back to school as most of the tourists on the island appeared to be families over from the mainland.
