I am making my first trip to Cozumel on Sept 1st. Will I nees a wetsuit or will a skin be enough? And does anyone know a web site that has current water temp for Cozumel on it? Thanks.

The temp should be in the low 80's at that time. Personally I still use either a 3mm shorty or a .5mm full. After 15 or so dives it can get chilly without even in those temperatures.

Why not bring both? Better to have the suit and be warm. After repetitive dives you may get chilled and be happy you've got the suit.

Have fun!

if you will be diving alot. The water temp in August/September is 82ish, but after repetitive dives, you may get chilled. Bring both your skin and a 3mm and you should be well prepared.

Have fun!

I'm generally fine all week in 78-82 degree water with a skin, but that's me: a stout built guy. I've seen some get chilled in the same water, especially slender girls, after a few days. 82 is still a lot less than 98.6, so the body's core temp is going to drop some. Wearing a good cap after the dive, when the boat wind is blowing on your wet hair, helps a lot, too; you can loose 40% of your heat loss from the head. :cold:

Then, too, I've noticed that my chill resistance varies at times. I'll take a light beanie next week, just in case. I've even been known to wear a one mil shorty over a one mil long with a beanie while others were wearing just a skin.

And I had a zipper break on a skin once, so now I carry a spare - the kind that has no thermal protection. It's light weight and cheap, so nice to have - just in case.

Therefore - I'd agree with the others: Try diving in the skin, keep the wet suit handy. Just add an after dive cap - preferably black.

Happy bubbles, :oldguy: D-Don

Not one mils, but Poly Skins, that have about one mil equivelent in thermal protection. I've got a long one, a short one (which I may war over the long one for a two mil effect), and a long regular skin - cheap and light - in case I break another zipper.

But anytime I wear my three mile long wetsuit, I put on a skin first, as it makes the wetsuit gon on easier!

You have a wetsuit that is three miles long? I'll bet you have trouble with it snagging on the reef... ;^)

are lightweight covering, often Lycra, mostly used for protection against jellyfish, accidental brushes up against coral, and sun protection. They also make it easier to slip on a wetsuit over the top of them. Very little thermal protection.

Another lightweight alternative is a 0.5mm neoprene wetsuit.
