Just returned from Cozumel. The good news is the reef is in better condition than Roatan, that’s for sure. The bad news is, yes, coral bleaching is present, it varies based on dive site. We did see spotted eagle rays and the endemic splendid toadfish, always a pleasure. Some flounders, and 2 flying gunnards. As Scuba Club refugees, we dove with Aldora Divers this time. Very different diving with them. They only use steel tanks and big ones at that. After 6 dives, I was still not comfortable with them, they are just too darn heavy and I just couldn’t get my buoyancy right, with no weight, with 4lbs or 6lbs, tried all. It also hurt my back. Other divers swear by Aldora, but I am used to the 60 minute dive and having the tank tipping all over the place was not comfortable for me. Rich, the DM, was great, as were all boat staff. 2 tank dives in the morning cost $160, which seems pricey, but costs have gone up everywhere. We stayed at Villablanca Garden Hotel. It was nice, clean, and convenient for pick up by Aldora across the road at the pier. However, Villablanca is not a dive resort, and they don’t have any place to shower outside or to rinse gear. Also restaurant is run separately and opening times were not reliable, so we got food from grocery store so we could meet Aldora at 7:45am on the pier. I really wish all hotels would supply drinking water for refilling water bottles, we used so many plastic bottles I still feel guilty!

@Bellen14 We missed each other by roughly a week, and I'm also a Scuba Club refugee! I also had Rich as my DM, quite an interesting character. And Aldora sure does have an early start time.

Thanks for the info about the Villablanca Garden Hotel.

The Aldora website lists morning 2-tank dives at $110. Nitrox is $11/tank. I guess it could get to $160 with taxes and marine park fees. If you stay at Villa Aldora (a great option, by the way), nitrox is free. They do have options for tanks, including steel 100s, which many women use. They have steel 80s, which I have used for shore dives at the Villa. The 117s, which they now have in addition to the 120s, are great. They are shorter and easier to use. Not to say Aldora is for everyone, but there may be ways to improve the experience.

Yikes. They haven't gone up that much. No, that is not a typical price. We pay about $90/trip. Maybe $95 with park fee.

($110 + 22 (nitrox)) x 0.16 (tax) + 132 (diving sum) = $153.12
Marine tag $7 so is $160.12
Pay with cash it is $15.30 less

$160.12 total is the correct price for one day of diving. For one charter it is $110 + $22 nitrox + 16% tax + $7 marine park fee as NDL_Diver pointed out.

Diving 2 or 3 consecutive days, the charter price drops to $105. Diving 4 or more consecutive days, the charter price drops to $100.

Jorge at the front desk explained all of this to me before I booked my four days of diving.
