Wrong. The air in commercial airlines are 100% outside air changed roughly 15 times an hour or so.

Ok, maybe so, but I know the incoming air at altitude has no moisture, and the planes are not carrying tanks for water to humidify the air. I know that plane cabin air is dry, but is it totally?

I'm feeling kinda dumb but if we need oxygen masks to drop from above in the case of incident and if we need tanks to breathe from climbing Everest, where is all the clean air coming from outside the plane?

It's the same air that the engines use to burn fuel. There is air outside, it is just very cold and thin (low pressure). The engines heat and compress the air before it is fed to air conditioning and filter units.

The air filtration system on planes was designed back in the good old days when smoking was allowed. Hence the very robust hepa filter stuff. About half of the inside air is bled out each cycle. So 50% fresh and 50% recycled. This is done about every 3 to 5 minutes.

This is way better than the air in my house or car. Or in any restaurant or store.

Yes, that is my understanding. So we'd better hope those hepa filters are really good at filtering out itsy-bitty virus particles, especially from the guy in the seat next to me.

Look how many rows away some people were infected. Based on this study, I am highly skeptical of the above statements of air purity on planes.

I forget. During SARs where the planes sanitized before every flight and did everyone wear a mask?

I wonder if we have information that can be used to do a SARs to COVID comparison?
