What's the latest word from Coz? They keep mentioning Cancun on the news but not enough word on Coz. Anyone heard what the damage was and if Christi and guests are OK? Any hotel damage etc?
Since you quoted my reference to things being sunny on Cozumel right now -- that was in refernce to the eye passing over the island. They're being hammered again, by winds 180 degrees from where they came from previously. This reversed second hammer is what really caused Iniki to toast Kauai.

I don't think that anyone should be making any comparison's with Emily. Emily blew right through.
Wilma is catastrophic! They are still being pounded!!! There has been no US news coverage of Coz, because no one can get in there. Some info has come out from a red cross shelter that states there is severe flooding, and its too dangerous to go outside. There is no assessment of damage yet. Christy had contacted us by this time already, after Emily. No word after Wilma. Its still dumping 40 inches of rain, extreme winds, massive waves and storm surge. The silence is deafening.

First: Lets all pray for the safety of our friends and their neighbors in Coz. How many days of rescue, red cross shelters, finding loved ones, etc., were necessary after Katrina? This could be worse than that.
Second: If they are all Ok, chances are minimal that many boats in Coz survived. They will not be thinking about taking the surviving boats out on a dive trip for awhile.
Third: With the severe flooding; clean water, sewage treatment, all infrastructure is at risk. That needs to be repaired first. They won't be allowing people into Coz. The availability of food, clean water, fuel, will be used for rescue and recovery efforts.
Fourth: Reports from hotels in Cancun say roofs are torn off, severe leaking inside the buildings, etc. Coz will be worse. There will be major repair necessary.
Fifth:If the industrious people of Coz put there lives together quickly, and re-open business sooner than expected, you can still expect the reefs to be damaged, and different for the rest of our lifetimes.

At this point, we need to wait for word of survival from our friends. Then, maybe we can plan a non-diving trip to volunteer with the recovery and repair of the area.

Lets hope everyone on Coz, in PDC and Cancun come through this. I left my place on Thursday afternoon and have been hanging out in Chetumal (Belize boarder) watching the hourly updates on the local TV. I am heading home tomorrow morning and hopefully I will still have a home too. Wow we still hadn´t settled the insurance claim after Emily :(

I am sure the diving will still be great, though you made need to wait a couple of weeks for services to be completely restored and the debris to be cleaned up. I am also sure that most of the boats will be alright - the captains know how to secure them to survive storms and hurricanes.

Later,

Dennis

I don't know Dennis...10 foot storm surge, reports of 30 foot waves, that puts boats 40 feet under water if they are secured tightly.
Did you see the piles of boats up onshore after Katrina. Those captains knew hoe to tie their boats, too. Entire marinas were a quarter mile inland.
I hope that I am wrong.

All the things you stated are speculations, right? What are they based on, since we have no word out of Coz?

Yes, they are speculations...but, look at the facts. 140 mph winds for over 24 hours. 40 - 60 inches of rain. The reports from the red cross. Compare that to Katrina and Gilbert, and you have catastrophic damage.
Weather channel just reported almost 65 inches of rain at Isla Mujeres, and monumental flooding in Yucatan.
Its not good. I hope that the news is exaggerated.

We were there about then too, the diving was as good as ever and the reefs were fine. We'l hope for about the same thing after Wilma.....nothing beats Cozumel drift diving!

Did not know they had that amount of rain. it does sound like major damage occured. I don't see Coz being back on line in two weeks. Sad.
