What a nice treat to see this big, sleek bird speeding by! I'd estimate his speed was about 5 feet per second, maybe more!

Over the span of less than two minutes, he twice dove down from the surface to the bottom at 24' and passed within ten feet of me about six times.

Occasionally, he did some rapid-fire snaking of his neck under rocks, but he mostly swam fast and straight, as if hunting for small fish in the open.

He didn't appear concerned or aware of my presence, as his second dive was right back down to my area.

This cormorant encounter made a routine dive pretty special, since this was only the second or third time I've seen one underwater! :D

Pics follow. Hope you enjoy them! :)

Thanks, David! A little blurry, though, since he was really hustling.... :)

Email me anytime, but unfortunately it takes pretty nice conditions to get me down there now. I'm older than you guys, you know.... :shakehead:

Very, very cool! Thanks for sharing!

Very cool, I was thinking the other day about how I have yet to see a bird underwater. Very cool I hope I am so fortunate some day in the near future.

Congrats, those are tough shots to get. I've had them zoom by me, but was never fast enough on the trigger to get pics of them.

Wow, just to see that would be great, but to be able to get it on film too is downright awesome, especially since he clearly didn't stop to pose and make it easy for you! Nice work!
