What a nice treat to see this big, sleek bird speeding by! I'd estimate his speed was about 5 feet per second, maybe more!
Over the span of less than two minutes, he twice dove down from the surface to the bottom at 24' and passed within ten feet of me about six times.
Occasionally, he did some rapid-fire snaking of his neck under rocks, but he mostly swam fast and straight, as if hunting for small fish in the open.
He didn't appear concerned or aware of my presence, as his second dive was right back down to my area.
This cormorant encounter made a routine dive pretty special, since this was only the second or third time I've seen one underwater!
