I would like to convert my reg to DIN, but as usual money is an issue. I am finding that it is going to cost me roughly $50 to convert to DIN and then another $75 to purchase a DIN/Yoke converter so I can use tanks offered on boat dives.

All suggestions/opinions welcome.

Anyone know how I can do this cheaper?
 
Three ways come to mind, but none of them are likely what you're hoping to hear.

1. You could dive boats that offer DIN tanks, so you don't need a converter.
2. You could bring your tanks with you when you do boat dives, so you don't need the converter.
3. You could keep shopping around until you find a lower price.
 
I think that's pretty much the price you'll need to pay for a DIN kit these days. However, you don't need to buy a DIN/Yoke converter. Just keep the old yoke and watch what they do when the swap them. it's a simple thing to do and you can swap them yourself if you know you're going to be needing it.

Also, many boats/ops these days will provide you with DIN tanks if you request it ahead of time.

That will cut your costs in 1/2.

Keep an eye on eBay for them. I got my Sherwood DIN conversion for $40 shipped. Took me 2 min to install. I also see din to yoke adapters there all the time for about 20 bucks. I keep the adapter in my bag all the time, you just never know.
 
Ok...so here is question. How many differnt types of threading are there? I have seen it up to nine thread, but then during further research I am finding that there is only 5 thread and 7 thread, so does the 9 thread exist?

As for the converter I did think about just changing it in and out as necessary. It looks easy to install.
 
Swapping it over yourself is a good option, if you're comfortable working on your own gear.
 
How involved is the swap? I literally (finally) just located a kit for my discontinued reg. So happy.

For one to be done right a torque wrench should be used.
Number two if you were to screw up the threads some how, you could be left buying a whole new reg.
I vote for bite the bullet and spend the $20-$40 dollars it cost for the adapter.

$75 seems a little steep on the DIN to yoke adapter, scuba.com has an XS Scuba model for $32. $50 sounds about right for most yoke to DIN conversion kits.

If $82 + shipping for everything is too much, stick with yoke and take in an extra boat dive.

Generally speaking, in order for a DIY approach to be advisable, you should both have appropriate tools to do it properly and be able to thread something together without stripping it. If you don't already have a torque wrench, you probably aren't going to save much by buying one of those instead of the adapter unless you either plan to do it for multiple regs, or you were planning to buy the tools for something else anyhow.

Of course, you could do it without the torque wrench, but strictly at your own risk. The potential problems probably justify the cost of the tool, when weighed against your safety and the cost of potential repairs to the reg.
