Being adventurous and trying new stuff is cool and all, but doing that while trying to lay 2500' of permanent line is another. I would say that to lay a good solid straight permanent line to do it the way I recommended. For exploring and the like, use the 3 man team, with one running the line, one doing the nav, and the other keeping an extra eye out. The nav guy can check the compass every minute or two and signal with the light to the guy running the line to make any corrections in direction.

Not to derail rjack's thread, but I've found it difficult to thumb the light. With the Goodman handle adjusted so it's stable on my left hand, there doesn't seem to be room to stick my thumb in there with the dry gloves on. Is this just a technique issue that I should keep working on, or is it acceptable to add a thumb loop to the Goodman handle when scootering?

I am struggling to understand your issue. Thumb tubes are fine. I use them on 10watt HIDs but don't bother with 18s because you have to rotage the ballast out of the way every time you use it and it isn't practical. Basically, you are grabbing the right side of the handle with your thumb and rest the bottom right corner of the goodmand handle on the scooter handle to keep it steady. You can move the light with your thumb. Do you understand what I am trying to convey. Wish I had a picture handy. Signals aren't usually that great but you can keep the light pointed steady and not wavering around.

Yeah as I said in the OP, 3 man team is so far the best option I found. But I'm open and interested in alternatives which is why I asked.

LCF has an X and I suspect the scooter handle is a bit high for the lighthead to rest anywhere since her hands are really tiny. Remind me next time we scooter together, I'll take a look and see if I can offer some tips.

Oh, I see, I didn't realize she was asking about a stroke scooter. Isn't the handle on that thing perpendicular to the diver so you could just leave the goodman handle on your right hand?

Theoretically yes. Kinda makes signaling hard though, wagging the whole scooter back and forth. Although I think she has like 6 dives with it and there's probably something which we could work out so she can hold the light with either hand. She's got a 21w - big lighthead, tiny hands. I'm no scooter genius (as evidneced by my OP) but the lighthead thing I got worked out :)

i wish you had a picture handy as well...

i've gotten so that i can swap my light to my right hand and check my SPG without too much signalling like i'm OOA, but its still not as smooth as i'd like...

I dive a strokey X...Here's how I deal with my light:

I nearly always have my thumb resting on the side of the top part of the T handle. So, to pass the light to my right hand, I lift my thumb and put the right side of the goodman handle flush against the left side of the T. I pinch the part that sticks up under my thumb and remove my left hand and shift my right thumb into the goodman handle area to hold it against the T handle with a little more grip.
