As I have said before, I am a beginner to this sport, just got my 50th dive in.

I was looking at a candy red Al80 tank with my girl at the lds and some fool under his breath to a friend says, "I thought only f@g$ would buy one of those". I asked him to repeat himself, he just turned red and walked away.

I was wondering how many people have the same narrow outlook? Every toy I have ever owned cars, bikes, motorcycles, windsurfboards have had nice paint jobs or colors...so why not my scuba gear. I have no problem with narrow minded comments they actually make me laugh.

What do some of you folks think about color tanks? And yes I am going to buy one maybe even two - one red and one blue

Most colored tanks are aluminum --- easier to paint than steel. Mine are canary yellow --- easier for my buddy to find me in a dark quarry and easier to pick out at the LDS after they are filled.

well, it's not like you were buying purple.

I bought my son a pigment dyed very nice pullover and he would not wear it. (purple)

...not that there is anything wrong if he was.

I don't like colors because they dominate in photographs. I like silver and black for this reason, but if you like bright colors, get them!~ As far as colors go, red is nice...

Tell your girl that she can have any color she wants but....

Any color will eventaully look beat up and not as pretty. The alternatives are shot blast aluminum or hot dipped galvanized steel.

If you are going to deal with color I'd want to get some visibility in return. Yellow is best, that neon green is OK too.

Addition: Going back to catherine96821's concurrent post you can see the different perspective of a cold water/limited visibility diver and a blue water photographer. NOTHING in scuba is black and white.

As for opinions in general some take things to the point of religion and that's when you need to keep you BS meter running. I think in diving this is exacerbated due to the abilty to say, " do this or you will die".

Pete

There are a lot of folks who think that if it's not black its not DIR-rigure.

Whats wrong with purple. Both my drysuits are purple (and black)

Yeah..paint will chip and wear. Go with shot blasted aluminum.

And when u get those comments, just say one of two things:

"your ugly and yo moma don't even love ya"

or

"yeah!!, but the color ith thooooo thexy!!"...then wink and smile at them.

Different colors are for different gas blends. Green for Nitrox, white for air, red for pepper spray... :D:D:D. Sorry just kidding about all that. Couldn't resist though.

I say whatever you like is what you should use. I personally like my tanks looking a nice patina gray since they are steel tanks for backgas. The aluminum tanks are all silver. My only reason is that I hate how tanks look when the paint chips. Your gas consumption and color preference may vary, so don't worry about what your tank color is.

I have a bright blue tank and when diving in groups it is easier to tell who your buddy is when they have a different colour of tank or gear.

As for the guy's comment, he needs to grow up. While we may have our differences, differences of opionions and beliefs, we are all still equal and are to be treated as such with respect and dignity.
