I think this is reprehensible, of course. However the US certainly has its bad history of trying to exterminate species like whales, seals and bison to name just a few.
 
Not to mention native Americans, wolves, salmon, tuna, Nassau grouper, jewfish, pismo clams, abalone, sawfish, swordfish, etc...we aren't exactly innocent in all this. Our hands are as dirty as theirs, but we are the untouchable American culture....it's more important to point out other cultures transgressions and atrocites.

Doesn't the argument go something like this?

America: "Sure, we hunted a number of species to the brink of extinction in the past, but we've become more environmentally aware in recent years and continue to clean up our act."

Developing World: "Fine, but we should have the opportunity to do the same thing until our countries are developed enough that we have the first-world luxury of being able to devote our attention to such problems."
