Apparently many of the safety skills included were not so much in response to actual accidents but rather to what, in their imagination, might happen on a dive.
Regarding "what might happen on a dive"
That is what we would do today, typical of risk analysis is FMEA Failure Mode Effects Analysis which does exactly that, tries ot imagine what could go wrong then mitigate the threat, in this case with training.
