I did a discover scuba back in 1975 (also Oahu). It was a little different then - they led you around by your pressure gauge like a dog on a leash.

When I got certified in 1975 not one person (including the instructor) had a pressure gauge or BC on our open water dives

You may be right, it was a long time ago and I don't remember what I ate for breakfast anymore. I remember him having hold of something leading me around. I wasn't getting away from him.

I got certified in 1971. We didn't use BCs, but pressure gauges were fairly common for divers in Puerto Rico.

The lack of an HP port on my Royal Aqua Master (avatar left picture) was the primary reason why I didn't use my double hose as much as I would have liked to. Monitoring gas pressure was far more convenient than just relying on my J valve.

Received my NAUI Jr card in 75. We had SPG's and actual BC's (horse collar). No power inflators or octos. This was in Ft Lauderdale.

I love having the ability to monitor gas supply. These days I don't rely on a J valve. I still dive mostly double hose regs it's rare they are bone stock. I'm usually diving a Phoenix-HPR-DBE DAAM, or a Kraken with a VDH plate and a wing. I still use Snark 3's which are modified to allow for SPG and lp port. The only "bone stock" regs I use are Sportsways HT I & 2.
