I don't see this lasting. Kind of silly the palm trees are barely moving on th FA webcam.
With these winds the east side would be much worse.

I think most of us recognize the logistical nightmare involved. Are the boats trailerable? If port is closed, can you pull the boat out and take it over on land? Maybe there is no boat launch on east side but that's why I mentioned a few days ago if the shops could pitch in and build a ramp or get the island to build one.

Forget the boats. When port is closed and I'm on vacay, I'd be happy if my shop took us over there and offered a few guided shore dives. It may not be on par with boat diving but... it's diving.

I agree. I would be happy with tank rentals and shore diving.

As for today I think closing the west side was unwarranted and think the east side would be rougher. I suspect that after the Sand dollar boat sunk earlier this month the port captain is skittish. It sounded like the boat had a mechanical failure that had nothing to do with the winds or sea state. Someone was very vocal about it on the internet and the mainline USA news media picked it up, probably because it was a cruise line excursion. This may be some of the blow back from that event.

If they are going to close the west side everytime east side is rough it will never be open.

That is not the case and has nothing to do with today's port closure. gopbroek's comment about it being rougher on the east side is generally always true. This is nothing new at all - its nature.

Predominant winds in Cozumel are East to West - therefore East side is windward side, west side is leeward side, except in the case of west or NW winds - then the reverse is true.

But good news is the port is OPEN now!

Sand Dollar sinking had nothing to do with sea conditions or wind. And the ocean has been flat all morning

I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for you.. having your livelihood dictated by arbtrary shut downs on the whim of someone who apparently has no guidelines that are followed.
