I would like to do some more close focus wide angle (CFWA) shooting. However, using the modular system, the only dome available is the 8 inch dome, which is so large that it makes lighting of CFWA objects very hard or impossible. Are there any plans to include a smaller ( 6 inch, 4 inch) dome to the modular system? Ideally, it should accomodate a 15 FE on a 1,4 xtender. Alternatively, are there any of the "standard" domes that you could recommend for such a setup (I am shooting Canon).

Best regards

Bent C

There are no plans to make a 4" dome. We have considered a 6" dome for the modular port system, but nothing is currently in development.

The #5503 standard 6" dome would typically be recommended for the 15mm lens. However, this port may not be long enough to accommodate accessories. Check your overall measurements against the ports on this page:

Hi Bill

I actually did a search before posting but didn´t find your post. My bad. But I guess you are right, some serious own development will have to be done. Maybe one of the fixed domes will work, I will try to measure my set up and see if one of them could be used. Probably, given the angle of view of the FE, the built in shade will have to go, but that can obiously be a minor operation. Otherwise, let me know if you do some major development. It would be a great addition to the modular system.

I have been talking to Barry about this and may have something in the near future. You need to be concerned with the focal point of the lens and dome port placement.

look around at some discussions here...

Also keep a eye on my web site for future developments as well as other accessories.

Please make one for Ike mod port system and you'll (?) have my money too!

Hi Jean

According to the list f ports, the port #5503.50 should accommodate lenses up to 10,1 cm. The EOS 15 mm fisheye with 1,4 extender measures 8,2 cm, so it should fit in dimensions. Do you think it would work out in reality, or would there be issues with vignetting, given the quite wide angle of view of the fisheye and extender?

Regards Bent

Bent,

Is your measurement from the camera to the end of the 15mm lens with the 1.4 extender attached? Also, are you measuring to the lens glass at the lens opening, or to the end of the built-in lens shade?
The Canon 15mm Fisheye lens does see a true 180 degrees from corner to corner. The angle of coverage should decrease slightly with the extender attached. Based on your measurements, your lens will extend to the same horizontal as the #5503.50 glue joint where the dome connects to the black angle ring on the port body. With the dome shade removed, you shouldn't see any vignetting with this port. This is all assuming you are using a "full frame" camera. If you are using a "crop factor" camera such as the Rebel, then vignetting will definitely not be an issue, but you still may need to remove the dome shade.

Hi Brett

Thanks, this was the answer I was looking for. I will have to redo the measurement just to be sure, but I think I measured to the front part of the lense. Given your information, and given that the 1,4 extender should decrease the field of view to around 140-150 degrees, the set up should work. At least the chances are good enough to give it a try!

I have now ordered the port. I tested the angular difference on the EF 15 fisheye with and without the extender and the difference is significant (from about 160 degrees to 110 degrees, very approximately, on full frame). So the above port should in theory work well, and probably ven with the shade on. Without the shade, or with a shorter shade, it should absolutely work. If the postal system succeeds getting it here in time, I will try it out in a couple of weeks in the Red sea, and let you know how it works.
