My son and I finished up our open water dives today with Tanks-A-Lot out of Clearwater. First dive was a ledge 12 miles out. 15 or so ft visibility with some triggerfish and my son's first dive outside of some springs -- my first time diving in the Gulf in 25 years. Second dive was Veteran's Reef (the barges) a mile away from the first dive. Vis was a little better and we saw a very nice Snook and a very large (to us, maybe 150 lbs) grouper -- my son is pumped beyond belief:D ...and I've got a dive buddy.

We both look at the certification as a license to learn and look forward to some shore dives, spring dives, and more Gulf dives as well. Headed to Key Largo next month for a couple days as well. What a great state.

I can't believe I waited a quarter century to get back in the water.:shakehead

That's great!!! Congrats. Now, you have just started to learn.

Have fun in Key Largo...

come to Venice and do some shark toothing from the beach

Way to go!

Badger Matt, I think you are the first person I've seen from "Riverview." I live in South Fork. Grats on your new cert. My buddy and I just received our certs as well. Definitely make sure you and your son make it out to Venice Beach. It's a great site, and you have the hope of finding some shark teeth. :)

Here's the link to the Venice thread:

If you and your son are looking for something to do this coming weekend, there will be an east-coast dive(Dania Beach). More or less a meetup of a bunch of scubaboarders, to dive a bunch of times. :) Some of the AOW people will be taking a boat out for a reef/wreck dive. The rest of us will just do another shore dive. :) Here's the thread if you are interested:

 there should be some sort of punishment around here - let me go find it

There are many others here that "grew" their own dive buddies and I am jealous a tad as mine don't care to dive :(

Anyway, welcome to the board and new adventures with your son. This is going to be great. Oh and we have some BIG boys around here - 400-600 lbs and they are pretty common :)
