I'm interested in people's opinions on this -

I won't go into the circumstances that have led to this situation arising (lets just call it supply chain issues), but what are people's thoughts on a student who has a new FMCL rebreather on order (and arriving probably a week after their course) doing their training course on the BMCL version of the same rebreather? It probably doesn't contravene instruction agency standards (but I could be wrong as I'm not familiar with the new ISO standards that the agencies have adopted for CCR training), - but does it pass the tests for quality training and application of common sense? Or is it more of a bad idea?

What unit?

Doesn't strike me as the worst thing, but you'll need some extra practice and training when the different unit arrives. That's alright because you should be doing LOTS of easy practice dives after your course anyway. You'll want to drill any procedures that are different, maybe do an extra day with your instructor to go over changes to drills and dialing in the configuration.

The student won't be able to do any extra training with the/an instructor when the new unit arrives as the student and instructor live in different countries and there are no local instructors where the student lives.

I wouldnt see it as an issue, if it was me I would personally grab a competant CCR buddy and do a controlled drills and skills session to familiarise myself with the new lungs

I would have no issues with this person. Especially if the CLs are just two different types from the same manufacturer. If they are aftermarket CLs with various modifications then additional MOD1 class-like practice dives with a mentor to develop the muscle memories are probably warranted

That would not be an issue, in fact, is just a matter in practice in controlled enviroment until you feel confident (it won't take long)
If possible, talking with other divers using the same unity may help, and some (like me) have used both configurations on the same ccr
Have a green!

The instructor will have to tell the student about adjustments to some procedures, e.g., loop flushes with FMCL may involve crushing a lung. Should not be an issue.

I think its a touch dodgy !!! ... it seems less of an issue to me if its an existing CCR trained diver doing a X over to a second unit. However thinking about my first CCR course, there were things mentioned in the course, the nuance of which, I didn't fully comprehend, perhaps for 6 months afterwards.

And yes I have had a buddy pass away on a FMCL incident

Sounds like a lot of liability on an instructor who would do a training on one, then issue cert for the other, especially if said breather or instructor happens to be from "let's sue everybody over everything" country... Dunno about written standards but I guess this would be an instructor call either way, and mysterious buddy would have to live with that.

Training wise surely the buddy would miss out on some things, but I generally find the front one (if we are talking about the same one...) quite a bit easier with the skills and course stuff vs the "let's lug 30 kg on my back" option, but to each their own. Saying that, I do actually enjoy diving with rEvo buddies weirdly enough...probably because they do not mind lugging the extra cylinder on them xD
And if its the one I am thinking about, then if I am not mistaken, head, electronics and all the funky stuff is exactly the same as in the front one, so this would be quite similar indeed.
