Was the conch removed by a person, i.e. hole in the top of the shell, or was it something else? Rarely see such clean shells

Not that we could tell - we thought the same thing. The backside was pretty crusty. And usually if they have been taken and thrown back in there will be a few of them. This one was all alone. It definitely caught our eye.

Interestingly, we are having a major blow here today with heavy seas, and while walking on the beach this evening we found a large conch shell that had washed up. It's backside was totally crusted over but the bottom was relatively clean - though not as colorful as the one I photoed. The other thing that came to mind was that conchs are usually facing down with the shell on their back as they crawl about. This one was on its side, so maybe the conch had been eaten by a turtle or octopus.
