Cave 1 single tank restriction scares me...

Different agencies call their classes different things. To my knowledge, the agencies calling their lowest level cave class Cave 1 are GUE, UTD and NAUI. I don't think any of the three has an expiring endorsement for doubles; in fact, I know GUE requires you be in doubles even to take Cave 1.

adding a tank would mean managing an extra gas supply, thus adding complexity beyond your training.

Never leave home without one. Not too difficult to stick a new reg in your mouth if yours fails. About as complex as drinking a glass of water without drowning.

I'm interested in knowing this too? Who has a expiration or a card for doubles use?

NSS CDS, NACD

There is obviously no underwater police. No one but yourself is holding you back if you feel safer diving with doubles.

Except in cave country...

A stage bottle is used to extend your penetration

Poor terminology on my part. Think redundant emergency gas. Or big spare air...:D

Aha! Thanks for the explanation... I figured it was something unique to cave diving.

So the control is at the fill station? I guess if they are in cave country, they just assume that everyone is diving in a cave, and wouldn't fill doubles for a wreck diver planning on driving to the ocean...?

You guys and your wet rocks! :)

They check your cards when you enter the gate at the cave, before you are allowed access to the water.

So why ask the question if you've already decided the answer?

If you already plan to ride an expired certification to dive two tanks by rationalizing the argument away, you might stop to consider how unforgiving this activity can be to corner-cutting. Remember, the first rule is training. Are you already deciding out of the gate how to side-step the limitations? It's your choice in the end.

Anyway, why ask the internet what to do? Where's your instructor?

Safe diving--

Edit--
From the original post, it seems maybe you are considering taking a cave class, but haven't taken one yet. Most of what I say above I stand by, with the following modification: Find a good instructor. Then ask him or her these questions. Eventually on the forum you can find someone who'll say what you want to hear, but this is a training intensive pastime, and reading posts isn't training. The limits are there to discourage people from just taking partial training and then going on to do more advanced diving than they are trained for. Just remember that just about everything about how things are done in the guidelines isn't just because someone thought it might be a good idea, there are usually a few deaths to motivate the idea too.

Same for NAUI, the S&P's for Cave 1 state you must be in doubles with two complete reg sets.

I went NAUI (also took a TDI course initially) since both their Cave 1 and Intro to Cave did not expire, and let you dive doubles. Both have very minor restrictions though.
TDI Intro to Cave - no jumps, doubles any way you want (I dove sidemount). Does not expire.
NAUI Cave 1- no major restrictions, only 2 navigational decisions. Does not expire.

Combined I was perfectly happy diving gold line for a while, but very quickly I wanted to just finish full cave (NAUI Cave 2) and be done with it, and have no restrictions on any of my diving.

It's worth it to just finish since you've already started... or if you don't care just switch agencies. For some agencies, so long as you can prove your skills to an instructor, you can jump around between agencies.

Thank you. Exactly the information I was looking for. I checked both their websites and it looks like TDI will be ideal for me since it appears that NAUI doesn't do sidemount. Thanks for the direction!

Knock yourself out dude-- nice to see you're already beyond worrying about what an instructor might have to say.

I have had enough run-ins with Instructors (some are SELF-PROCLAIMED EXPERTS) that I will listen to their opinion, but I make the final decision about my diving equipment, and my dive profile(s).
