Dr. Bill called me on the phone a little while ago and asked me to let you all know that he is OK. He was allowed to return to his home this morning and was relieved to see that it was still there.
Twice he thought that he had lost his home, but his structure and those around it were saved by the tireless efforts of the hard working fire fighters on the scene.
For those of you who know Mayor Bob Kennedy, his home also came very close to being consumed in the blaze, but apparently they were also able to save it.
As far as Dr. Bill knows, only one person has been reported injured. It was a local fire fighter who was one of the early responders. It looks like the fire fighter will be OK and was suffering from smoke inhalation.
The island will most likely be closed through the weekend to anyone who does not live there because much of the work force was evacuated from the island. There would be very few people there to take care of business.
Dr. Bill is currently without Internet access, but will update us when his access is restored.
This fire is estimated to have consumed approximately 5,000 acres.
I'd personally like to thank the men and women of the various fire departments for not only the tireless efforts that they have made in response to this fire, but also for what they do in battling other fires like the one we had in Griffith Park earlier this week.
This is expected to be a very difficult and active fire season here in Southern California and I want them to know that they have our heartfelt support for the dangerous job that they do to protect the public.
Hats off to the federal, state and municipal fire fighters that will most likely be center stage throughout this summer helping to keep us safe. Their hard work and sacrifice is greatly appreciated.
