I hadn't been on the island for almost a year and when I returned this week I couldn't help but notice that the lockers at the dive park are gone. My limited investigation turned up minimal information. One dive shop employee said they were removed because "The Company" (SCIC) thought they were ugly, another dive shop employee indicated that the lockers were removed in March 2013 and was told they would be replaced within a couple of weeks and finally an employee of the Conservancy said she heard a rumor that the lockers were removed due to security issues.

I used the lockers every time my wife and I dove the park. I had a secure feeling storing my cell phone, room key and those dives when I decided not to take my camera, etc... They were handy for storing weights instead of lugging them back to the hotel room every day.

So now for the questions: Why were they really removed, are they coming back, can we as divers contribute to their return, and who can make their return happen???

They were still there as of the week of March 16 so must have been removed after that. Dr.Bill will know more about when they were removed and maybe the exact details, too.

Not sure what the real story is. They were ugly but when they worked they were helpful to divers. Just don't confuse the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy (SCIC) with the Santa Catalina Island Company (SCICo). The dive park is on SCICo property (they own the Casino).

Correction noted, it was an employee of the Santa Catalina Island Company that I spoke with.

It would sure be nice if the lockers were replaced by nicer lockers. Preferably lockers large enough to keep all equipment, including a tank.
would like to see this as well.
the lockers located next to the ferry dock are nice, one side of the building has the smaller lockers, for smaller stuff and the far side has the larger lockers big enough to hold your dive gear. Of course these are to far from the point, but I have used them when renting a kayak and leaving my freediving gear when going into town for lunch.
Does anyone known if the fill station is open during the week now?

The lockers were definitely a useful item over there. Too easy for someone to just "walk away" with your dive bag while you are underwater. Anyone know if there are plans for some sort of replacement?

Last month on the 25th, we made a trip to the Dive Park. I actual paid for a non diving friend to go along and watch our stuff. Kind of an expensive way to keep your stuff safe, but it was worth it. Non diving buddy got to go snorkeling which made his day. Sure hope somebody gets some new lockers installed soon.

You know I appreciate the concern over security, (and use a Stanley box to lock my stuff up) but have there been that many issues of theft from the dive park? I know Dr. Bill got a computer stolen but I believe (and can be wrong) that it was left on the wall. I just can't remember the last time I heard of something left out on a dive mat or by the wall being stolen.
