Hi guys,

We'll be staying at the Casa Mexicana later this month and their website says that they have wifi throughout the hotel. If anyone has stayed there recently, can you please comment on how's the wifi? Strength? Timing?

We have "dependents" at home that we'd like to check on regularly, as well as possible work emergencies that may need to be dealt with. Thanks!

There is a current thread in here on this very topic...I seem to recall from reading that thread that its sketchy in the rooms, but the lobby area is fine.

The Casa's WIFI was updated a few years ago. It's much better than it was but it's not perfect and, of course, being Mexico don't expect Gigabit speeds. However, for checking email, posting on social media and uploading some photos it has been just fine for us. Every now and then when we get a weak signal for some reason or another if you walk to the door of your room it will strengthen - Maybe it has something to do with the place being constructed of about a million tons of concrete? Also, like any place there is that peak use period where everyone must be trying to do everything between say 8PM and 11PM which slows things down a bit. WIFI also works down in the Casa's common areas for the most part but we've lost signal when we've ventured out past the pool to the front of the pool deck. They also have PC's available down by the pool in the little computer room by the restrooms but I never had a need for them with the WIFI.

I would be less worried about the wifi strength, and asking more about the upstream connectivity. Last time I was in Cozumel (different hotel) I had great wifi strength, but intermittent internet connectivity. I guess reading email surfing the web was fine, but uploading my scuba videos to youtube or audio-skype was almost impossible.

I guess this could have been the hotel's connection, but maybe it is indicative of their ISP or maybe the whole island.

Maybe it was just sunspots that week :)

I guess my priorities would be using WhatsApp messaging and voice calls, accessing emails and surfing the internet for restaurants, things to do on the island. It would be really nice if we could stream movies or shows as well, for a little entertainment before going to bed. I doubt we'll be uploading stuff to youtube while on the island.

I think you'll be able to do about everything you mention with the exception of uploading video or streaming movies and shows. However, cable TV at the Casa has a few channels in English and a couple are non-stop movie channels. Years ago they had piles of English channels but that changed for some reason. Perhaps they are back but I doubt it. There is always a soccer game, bull fight or Mexican variety show to be watched though if the movie channel doesn't cut it. IF you have piles of storage, download some movies now and bring them with you. Personally, I like surfing Mexican TV as ya never know what you're gonna find.

Thanks! That's all good! Streaming movies or shows is a nice to have not a need to have.

We don't stream movies, but have not had many issues with the wifi. We usually have at least 2 of 3 bars, and moving to a different spot in the room will usually get 3 bars. Some rooms are better than others, we are usually on the 4th or 5th floor and prefer to face the breakfast atrium. If my memory is correct, the city view rooms may Be a little slower. We have never had an issue where it didn't not work at all, or been so slow it was frustrating.

good luck and get ready for a great stay!!

Update. We are at the casa now and I am typing this from our BALCONY! Also have been able to stream video from YouTube with no problem. Looks as though the casa has upgraded again since last year and perhaps fatter pipes are now serving the area. Can’t say if movies will stream but this is impressive to say the least.
