Not having to deal with dragging bags around and waiting hours for a bus/ferry is well worth the extra $$ to fly direct for us.

For me it's usually around $150-200 a person difference (sometimes even more). That's worth it and I really don't mind the bag drag at all. The total wait time for transportation from CUN to Playa and then the ferry usually adds up to as much or less then what I'd be waiting for a connecting flight to Cozumel. I'd much rather be waiting for the ferry, sitting beachfront sipping a margarita then be connecting in another airport.

If I had a non-stop available to Cozumel then it would be a different story. I don't, but I do have 3 flights a day to Cancun from my preferred airport on my preferred airline. If I want a little less convenient of an airport and airlines where I won't get upgrades then I have at least a dozen non-stops a day to Cancun to choose from... and still none to Cozumel.

I remember one trip to Coz, in which my bud decided to go later on - but we couldn't get him on my Coz flight cheap enough. We flew to Houston together, he left on the CUN flight, an hour later I left on the CZM flight, and with my airport van stopping at several hotels before mine, he arrived at the hotel 5 minutes behind me. He'd used the van tho, not the bus. We were able to book an Open-Jaw with him returning out of CZM so it was pretty painless.

When you find a cheaper flight into CUN, do also explore the Open-Jaw. Sometimes you can fly into CUN but out of CZM for the same price as RT to CUN.

About the only thing that stops the ferries is a hurricane. Normal Port closures from Nortes do not affect the big boats.

In Dec '06 the harbor was shut down on 3 seperate days for all traffic until late afternoon...

The differance for us is $40 between flying to CZM vs CUN. Unless it $200+ we'll go direct to CZM.

Haha and if the ferries are running in rough water, make sure your seat has a barf bag. I just sleep. I have a hard time staying awake until a plane takes off, a ferry leaves dock, or a bus leaves town after so many years - I sleep on the boring parts of trips.

It's just a matter of preference.

Flying from LAX I did not see any direct flights to Cancun or COZ. Yes there was a price difference, but I just wanted to arrive in COZ mid-morning, get to the resort and dive by afternoon. Next trip, (second time), maybe I'd consider the "bag drag".

Fantastic. Do what works best for you.... if it was only a $40 difference I would fly to CZM too.

There's really no right or wrong answer to the flying to Cozumel vs Cancun questions... just depends on personal criteria, preferences and what dollar amount of savings you consider "worth it." That's going to be different for everyone.

Some people prefer to get off the plane, in a van and be at their hotel in minutes, no matter what the cost. Others will feel the trip from CUN to Playa and then the ferry is no big deal for the money they're saving.

End result is the same - we all get to Cozumel and enjoy a nice dive vacation.

Yes, you could have a problem if the return ferry was shutdown at the time you wanted to go but that is a VERY rare event. Been here since 1992 and I make all of my travel choices on the odds. I can of course recount several times that 7 or 11 have come up on the crap table 10 times in a row---but I'd still never bet on it. Maybe I was unaware of the missed 3 ferry trips in 2006 but I am absolutely positive that closures or delays at Houston or Dallas happen much--much more frequently.

But again, the biggest factor by far is the advantage of a direct flight into Cancun from wherever you are. Given that opportunity and no economic loss it is, to me of course, a NO BRAINER.

Looking at Cozumel in October. From checking airfares, I can go into Cancun a LOT cheaper. It appears the trip from Cancun airport to Cozumel via bus and ferry is pretty painless. Would like to hear your own experiences and any suggestions.

while everyone is debating if it is cheaper, faster, slower, inconveinent, etc...here is a link if you decide to do the ADO bus thing :D

Cancun Airport to Cozumel by ADO Bus

have a great trip

I have not been through the Cancun airport in a few years but it used to be awful about crowding and long lines. The convenience factor of CZM vs CUN is worth some of the extra cost if Cancun's airport hasn't improved.
