Question Can this tank still be Used? Been a long time since last hydro and heard it may not be able to be certified. Guess it's been a while.

I have 2 of those except I still have J valves on mine. You'll need to find a shop that will fill them near you. Then a shop (hopefully the same one) that will do a visual and eddy current. The hydro comes after our passes the previous 2 items. Once they pass hydro and vip you'll get a stamp on the neck that has a VE after the year. Most shops don't recognize that the tank is safe once fully tested because it is taboo aluminum.

technically, if it passes hydro and VE, the DOT would consider it acceptable to use. but the added cost of the VE (required yearly) and the headache of finding a shop that will accept and fill it, means you are better off turning it into a windchime or finding a scrapper that will take it.

It costs an extra $10 or so if you have a good shop. Hydro, vip, VE on 2 tanks and hydro/vis for pony was is under 200. VIP and eddy is very inexpensive.

It may not even matter if it's the "bad" Aluminum alloy, a lot of shops won't fill an aluminum tank that old. I've got a Luxfer 80 in my garage that was last inspected in 1995; with an April 88 manufacture date, it should be 6061, but I have no illusions that I'll ever get a shop to fill it.

That's why I said find a LDS that will fill it before doing any of the other work. If the nearest shop is too far away then sell them for chimes or recycle for the AL weight

It is not a luxfer. Those old tanks were a problem (for some reason) and I don't think a lot are in service, plus they are prone to corrosion.

Technically, it could be a good tank.
In some places, even if you spend all the money getting tests and inspections to prove that it is good, finding a filling station can be difficult due to random local rules or preferences.

If looking to buy, pass.
If you already own, have a good long talk with your local dive shop before putting money into it.

I was under the impression that SP 6688 was never renewed making the tanks basically illegal and not valid for hydro.
