Trying to take on something without knowing the background is one thing, taking a course via Youtube University is another. I would rather get the instruction.

In fact i was saying that, after reading the manuals and books i thoguh it would be ok to dive, together with my experience, by that time i was 20+ years on OC, with technical and instructor ratings. Then i've tryed CC and was a totally different beast, so i've lowered my self expectations and followed the right route.
I would never try something i've just saw on youtube. The Internet is a can of worms with much more misinformation than useful information. As sayed, read BOOKS and manuals. And very soon recognized i was wrong on my route (that's why i talked about Dunning Kruger)
Tô get information in Internet is too easy, but to transform it in knowlege requires some Wisdom
I guess, by the coment, that Capt Jim Wyatt just get the point. The only way of not take risks is not to live, because since you are born you are subject of chances

Did TO ever say he wants to dive a CCR without training? No, he did not. And even if this was his intention it's his own decission. We can discuss this without thumb down, we can discuss this in a serious way.

Back to topic: Of course you can easily buy a new CCR without any training at all. If producer askes for certification just buy it from a certified diver. I am not saying this is a good idea, I am not saying this is a bad idea. This was not TO's question.

Going back to the original question which was asked,
No they’re not locked as such, but if you order a rebreather it’s highly unlikely that a complete machine will be sent to a home address, usually the manufacturer will send it to an instructor approved by themselves and chosen by the purchaser if new,
If second hand then really it comes down to the manner of purchase, private sales are generally sold with a disclaimer for you to sign and if through a dive shop usually they only hand it over to your instructor or hold a key part back to give to the instructor so the machine is unusable until you start your course (loop and mouthpiece been common)

As stated previously you don’t want to go near one of these things without training though, they can kill you on dry land and you wouldn’t know anything about it if they’re not set up correctly.

I know very well various rebreather divers that have little clue on the workings or much else of their units
and when I ask their various instructors, how the **** so and so possibly passed their course, they tell me

"Good instruction!"

and we then laugh and laugh and laugh


Reminds me when at 15 the pilot handed me the controls

So to toe the party line even though some of the ideas of the instructors and pilots here, make me flinch

So there it is, in order to become a rebreather diver you need good instruction but far more importantly

all you need is money


Did you know, generally speaking, that rebreather diving leads rather more often to divorce than death

Rebreathers can kill you, probably not, and unlike wives ha ah aha ha, they won't wash your underpants

You can buy almost anything without training.I know people that own airplanes and pay a pilot to fly them around. You can buy a motorcycle, parachute, any number of machine tools, big fargin boats, $300 an hour escorts, and not know how to use any of them.

Well at least the escorts will offer guidance - in one way or the other... That would be like discover dive with a rebreather instructor.

is it true that if you buy a new ccr without course, its locked antil you do, and then ask the store to unlock it?

You can buy a parachute and jump out of a plane without training. It would be safer then what you are thinking. After 62 years of working underwater with scuba, I didnt even think of buying a rebreather and using it without training. Neither should you.
