I KNOW that this is the SoCal board...but since I feel that I know most of you guys... I thought I would ask if anyone has dove the Big Island. We are going for our honeymoon in May and we were wondering what shop has good charters.

We are planning on bringing our own gear...with the exception of tanks and belts.

We are staying at a timeshare in Kona for 8 days.

Additional to diving...any other recommendations? I know we want to go to a luau... any suggestions?

Thanks guys!

Jacks ROCKS. I always use them.

Do a shore dive at Place of Refuge

Rent Kayaks from Kona Boys and kayak to Capt Cooks Monument and snorkel/dive there.

Pick up a copy of "The Big Island Revealed" Great insider information written by a local couple.

Have a wonderful time.

I dove with Jack's Diving Locker Oct. 2004.
They very well organized, knowledgeable and all around a great bunch of people. The shop is nice and well stocked, the boats clean and not too crowded. Do the Manta Ray night dive, be sure to buy a video for the dive too. You won't regret it.

I second the recommendation to buy a copy of "The Big Island Revealed". It's called The Big Island for a reason, you will need it.

Side note: Snorkeling at Kahalu'u Beach Park was great, a little crowded on the beach but plenty of room in the water plus family of turtles are out there.

I hope to get back to Kona someday, and when I do I will certainly go back to Jack's.

Have a great time!

I'm not a big Jack's fan. But I'm not big on large and crowded and fancy.

I liked Big Island Divers. Polite, knowledgeable but small enough to remember you on your second visit.

I brought all my gear, also, and rented 2 tanks from them for $20.00 per week per tank.

I'll 2nd the Big Island Divers...I dove with them quite a bit. A great shop and good people.

My family and I love Big Island Divers. They certified us about 6 years back and we've been by a couple times since then to dive with them. It's always a pleasure.

Don't miss the Manta Ray dive and some outfits take you to snorkel with dolphins. I used Jacks Diving locker but might try Big Island Divers this time.
The beach at Keahou (sp) by the outrigger has great snorkeling - shallow dives.

Don't miss the Manta Ray dive...
Yeah!

Thanks for all of everyones input! I will look at both shops and see which one... if anyone has anymore info, we are happy to look at all.

I knew I could count on you guys!
