I saw an apparent crimp, but the seat was easily removed...

Sounds like the original seat was replaced with a narrower one to make it possible to shove it past the crimp. Unfortunately, a narrower seat would not have been secured, and might have allowed overlapping indentations by the crown, which could result in poor lockup.
