My plan was always to get 100 dives logged before treating myself to a computer. However, I'm going to Bonaire next month...

I'm a couple tests away from getting my Nitrox certification. Apparently they stopped automatically giving out Nitrox tables some time this fall because computers are the norm.

So now, with a mere 73 dives to my name, I think I'm going to have to buy a computer. In fact, I'm looking at the Oceanic Geo 2.0.

Any experience with that one? I like the dual algorithm option (I prefer a conservative algorithm but nice to have a choice) I totally love the 24-dive log memory...would love to just download dives instead of doing all that paperwork. Also, the price is quite bearable.

Recommendations anyone?

Computers are not so much a "treat" any more, as they have become pretty much mainstream in diving, in some places it is now mandatory to have a computer. Yes, diving can still be done on tables, but unless you do completely square profiles, a computer has many advantages of the potential of longer dives & more dives, plus keeping track of so many other variables (Depth, max dept, dive time, nitrogen loading/ decompression needs, temperature, ascent rates). I know a lady on a live aboard who dove tables (multiple dives over multiple days). She had to usually sit out dives 3 & 4 because of the NDL's of the tables. You can still use air tables to do dive on Nitrox, but you would have to learn many formulas (Converting depth to pressure, Best mix, Target operating depth, maximum operating depth, equivalent air depth,.....). It can get a bit complicated. I do not use the Oceanic 2.0 myslef, but my shop sells them & from what I've seen they seem to be decent computers. They have everything that you would need.

We have an online class for the Geo 2.0.
If you decide to buy the Geo 2.0, make sure to ask for the Activation Code.

And finally, both PADI and SSI have now specialty courses for the Geo 2.0 (basically after you do our online class, you have to do a training dive with a qualified instructor during which the instructor will check to make sure you know how to properly operate the Geo 2.0).
