But it's not enough to pack essentials in the roll-on?!

I told my newbie dive buddy that I like to pack regs, dive computers, masks and cameras in my roll-on where I can maintain close personal security, well padded for when I have go gate-check the bag on regional jets like we get in West Texas. She did, but that wasn't enough...!!

Her land camera screen still got broken. It shouldn't have, but rough handling can happen, and it was. Continental is liable for carry-on and gate-checked luggage, but now - they are discouraging her from filing a claim. Emails have been ignored, and a phone call resulted in a "don't bother" reply.

Damn, what if this were to happen to my dive computer, etc...?

She's gonna file the claim anyway. we'll see...??

I'm thinking about 1/4" playboard for the insides of my roll-on.

Next time, carry them for her as your third 40# carry-on. I'm sure your seat mates won't mind. Put 'em in Pellykan Cases. They go bOnK when they hit your dive buddy's noggin as you open the overhead.

Carry-on them regs. Good idea.

On regional jets like the Embraer that Dandy Don mentions which are used by Continental, the carry-ons are 'gate checked' - i.e. you are not allowed to bring them in the cabin. We had the same issue with Delta who uses Canadair CR7 (as did United where we lived before), but never had our stuff broken (yet). We were more at risk of the contents handling by TSA personnel who never saw scuba gear go through the X-ray except when we were traveling evidently.

I always kept my wife's U/W camera satchel as my personal item so it never left my control, and she kept the land camera in her 'personal item' bag that carried her purse, the camera, and other things.

I wouldn't let Continental off the hook on this, Dandy Don. But, there's not a lot you can do to avoid the potential for the 'gate checked' carry-ons to be handled like the Samsonite bag in the gorilla cage. I do remember Christmas a couple of years back a videotape making national news showing baggage handlers on the ramp at MSP if I remeber correctly having 'fun' flinging people's bags like they were practicing for throwing the hammer at the next Olympic Games - and there was a passenger on a nearby jetway whose videocamera was the 'personal item' who filmed this. Maybe you can mention this to Continental (although I think the tape was of Northwest at MSP).

me too, my next trip is coming up and i am packing my bc and reg, computer, camera in my carry on, it's around 25lbs and that's include the carry on bag itself

was considering buying the new pelican carry on 22x14x9, but the case itself weight about 16lbs. and the actual dimension inside the case is about 20x12x7 which makes the room even smaller

You want your mask in there too...!

Heard about a customer at my LDS who opened his Pelican carryon in flight, then after he landed, the sudden change in air pressure when he opened it at sea level blew the seal on his dive computer. :11:

Unless he had one without a valve on it, which i think all of them do, this won't happen. i open mine all the time on the plane to get my laptop out and it never has any pressure difference after i land.

You can buy the pluck foam used in pelican/storm cases as a seperate item. I'm sure there are companies that also make the stuff that would be a bit cheaper than buying Storm or Pelican specific pluck foam.

Why, oh why would anyone use a Pelican as a carry on?

They're heavy, inefficient, expensive, and un-necessary.

I own several that get thrown in duffel bags and checked.

What's the motivation about carrying them into the cabin? Style and panache? You can't protect a soft sided bag from what little might bump it?

What is the deal? I gotsta know.
