I've seen OW students doing a weight check while finning continuously. They are nervous, it happens. I suspect that once they relax they will lose some lead with the next weight check.
Of course, but that's not a proper weight check. Can't say I saw any finning myself when I was doing student weight checks. Hard to figure why someone would be nervous is such shallow water (you need not be over your head), but as you say, I'm sure it happens.

I often read on SB about those dropping all kinds of weight when becoming more experienced. Over the 10 year period of my first used wetsuit I did drop about 6 pounds. But had to put it back on with the "new" used suit 2 years ago. So, I guess in 12 years I really dropped no weight.

2015 Bonaire: 10 lbs in a rental BCD. 2016 Roatan: 10lbs in BP&W (Al). 2017 Costa Rica: 8lbs in BP&W. Can't say it's dropping all that fast on me either.

If you were taught to be properly weighted in the first place, you won't drop much weight, if any, as you gain experience.

:D Oh, I dunno. I test-drove my BP&W in the same pool where I did OW, I had more weight on me for the class. Don't recall how much more.

The comment was more about SB bias: just like "shearwater" and "BP&W", overweighed is the answer to every buoyancy question.
