Way, way back, before commercial spring straps were a thing, I used to make straps for my buddies with delrin rod and stainless welding wire. Easy to make with a chop saw and a drill press. I even sold them on ebay for a while. I should have taken out a patent lol.

Twenty five years later and still swimming strong 😀

Turns out once I have used the weird grey thingy between left and right ear, those clips can be easily taken apart, no cutting was needed.
Those pins looked deceptively the same thickness but turns out slightly fatter on one side...the side I previously tried to push them out from of course xD

Used 6mm bungee - 8mm would probably fit but 6mm was just perfect. Single one as with double it was just a bit too rigid, reminded me of the spring too much.
Was also planning to repurpose spare Scubapro straps and get that rubber grip thing (as per post #1) but settled for the time being on the original cover. Taking it off seems to work fine (so far on land only) once one hooks 1/2 fingers from the side then just moves them to the back while pulling.
WIP pics below - still adjusting the bungee length. And those darn boots are quite wide at the bottom...might switch to XXL fin size even for the thinner ones after all.
