I searched and didn't find any posts mentioning anti-malaria rugs since 2020, so I'm wondering if anybody has any more current information on the bug situation in Rotan? And weather antimlarial drugs are really needed? I'll be there in mid june.

According to the CDC, Roatan is considered to be a malaria transmission zone, and anti-malarial prophylaxis is recommended. (Atovaquone-proguanil, chloroquine, doxycycline, mefloquine, tafenoquine)

I doubt much has changed with time. The numerous pre-2020 threads have various points of view. The first time I visited Roatan, I hadn't done any research, so I just winged it. The next trip, in 2013 or so, I had read the SB threads galore, and took some prophylaxis meds (but really, the no-see-ums/sand flies were the greater concern for me). Last year (2023) was my third trip, and I did little planning for the trip and had totally forgotten about the malaria issue, so I took no precautions. I think it depends where on Roatan you are going, etc. Resorts may take measures to keep the skeeters in check. If you're out and about, who knows.

I've been to Roatan 5 times now since 2017. Never bothered with the antimalarial drugs (they give me very vivid and disturbing dreams anyway). Generally, when there is a good breeze, the bugs lie low. I recommend bringing 2 different bug sprays in the event one doesn't do the trick for you: Deep Woods OFF consistently works well for me on Roatan, but Ben's 100% DEET did not.

I just stayed at a small hotel in West End from June 3 to June 10. I don't even remember any mosquitos.

When we were there, we took malarone, an anti malarial agent. At Coco View, they had a fair number of no see ums, but not so many mosquitoes. Still malaria can give you recurrent attacks for years so best to be careful.

Malaria is a growing problem in Europe as it’s spreading anti-clockwise round the Mediterranean. Latest I’ve heard is it’s approaching Italy. I take anti-malaria tablets every time I go abroad.

For the sake of a tablet a day v malaria for life.

I'll Be diving with Coco View in August. Any recommendations for a bug spray?

For No-see-ums, Avon's Skin So Soft works well for resort living. If you are going into the bush, get a Deet based repellent.
