Don Janni:
Tobin,

Here's the difference in the way we think; you said my reply was a hyperbolic response while I would say my reply was a sarcastic response to a hyperbolic post.

We may not think as differently as you have assumed. My original response used the adjective sarcastic, which I changed to hyperbolic. Sarcastic carries a negative conotation, and thinned skinned people might not react well......

Don Janni:
Here's a challange for you... an opportunity for you to put your money where your mouth is.

Do you have the impression that I've been unwilling to just that? Submitting my goods for a head to head review in a national Scuba Diving Magazine kinda fills that bill, an opportunity/risk apparently some other BP&W manufacturers chose to pass on......

Don Janni:
I have never had a bp/w on my body. I currently use a Zeagle Stiletto and I like it a lot.

All I ask is a truely open mind. I'll be frank, my concern here is trying to decide if your's is. The casual reader of this thread might conclude that you are a biased defender of "ABBP&W" Anything But a BackPlate & Wing, and have a very negative opinion of BP&W users. What I hope is that you are expressing your dislike of the evangelical passion of some of the BP&W users.

Don Janni:
As you can see below, my wife and I spend 8 days in Coz starting 3 weeks from now. We're diving with Christi if you happen to know her. We're signed up for 19 dives at the moment.

Sounds like fun. I've never been there, I dive mostly in the (semi) cold waters of California

Don Janni:
Set me up with the appropriate rig and I'll take it to Coz and give it a serious tryout. I'll take what ever time is needed to get it setup right before we depart. There's a pool near by if needed. I'm willing to do this because SAC, trim and stability are important to me and I'm very concious of those things. Afterward, like it or not I'll post a report on it. Unbiased as I can be. And in return, if it's as good as you and all the other say it is....... I'll buy it from you!!! Scouts honor.

Do you accept my challange?

Don

I need to know more to be able to recommend the most appropriate combination.

Height and weight, exposure suit, current Lbs carried for starters.

Regards,

Tobin

OK, sports fans,
At the request of the author of this thread, any further posts that do not RELATE DIRECTLY TO THE QUESTION ASKED in the original post will be deleted.

If all posts stuck so strictly to the original question, there'd be about 95% fewer posts on Scubaboard. (And BP/W advocates wouldn't be able to recommend them on a lot of threads. :) ) Whatever happened to that description of threads as "conversation?"

I just got back from diving at our local quarry, vis was about 5 feet at best and in some places went to zero due to the fact that we were working with OW students who were stirring up the silt. I'm not a DM yet but since I'm there and I stay out of the way, the instructors always appreciate an extra eye, especially when on different occassions, vis goes to zero and they need help searching for those who wander off. I chose to go with my doubles today as I'm getting used to them and when we were back on the surface, I had several of the OW students asking me about the backplate and wing. To the chagrin of my best friend who manages the dive shop (and the OW student's instructor), I gave the students an overview of my BP/W and my experiences. To the the surprise of my best friend I suggested Dive Rite (the only tech gear my shop sells)even though I like some other brands better. The popularity of the systems will rise as more people are exposed to them. It isn't often that OW students are exposed to a BP/W, let alone the doubles I had on, during their first training dives. Education on the choices out there is the key. Unfortunately, old habits die hard.

okay jepuskar,

I've gone through the 1st 90 posts (I know... get a life) and the results of your poll is:

Growing trend toward bp/w:
Yes: 2
No: 9

78% of those who answered your question say they do not believe there is a growing trend toward bp/w's.

On a stretch you could make it: Yes 3 and no 10

I think you got your answer.

(Note: all other posts were off subject)

Thanks for the stats Don, but if I wanted a poll I would have created one. ;)

I would much rather engage in dialect with my fellow Scuba Board members that further enhances our knowledge and creates a mutual understanding from which we could all benfefit from. This type of interaction is what this board is all about and is what makes Scuba Board the most successful online forum for Scuba diving in the entire world.

:D

I think you're on to something.

There's a reason why dive shops insist that their staff wear what the dive shop sells.

I recently started teaching for a particular shop, and part of our agreement was that I would not have to purchase new gear. I have something over $20,000 invested in my current dive gear ... and very little of it is of brands that are carried by that store. So what does my very first class produce? A student who strolls into the store and exclaims "I want a setup just like Bob's".

Recreational divers purchase what they're exposed to ... that's the overwhelming criteria for new diver purchases.

And here we have a good reason for the agency bashing that's so prevelent.

A few years, and a 100 dives later, that same student -
" I bought what my instructor wears, he teaches for XXX which is a YYY shop. If he uses ( and likely "swears by") that kinda garbage, What was his instruction like? It must have been BS too! Man I got Hosed by YYY"
