Computers have came a long way. They’re a valid tool.
Yes they have. It is still important to learn to conduct dives without them, particularly decompression ones. Computers are now more reliable than lights, so it is more about understanding where you should adjust despite what the computer is saying and having a feel for what the profile of any given dive will be (when the original plan changes) without needing to blindly follow the computer.

What you can learn using a tool like a shearwater is amazing though. Being able to see the exact same model you are using for planning purposes in real time really assists in understanding where the shortcuts we use such as average depth makes dives more or less conservative depending on the profile and has taught me to adjust some of the tools I use to calculate deco.
