Yes, half of the reefs at Bonaire are DEAD. Viz is ok about 50 feet this past week. Crime is horrible and I saw tons of trucks that had been vandalized and robbed. Police do NOTHING about theft or stopping crime. Diving was fun but would not come back. I heard that Cayman has way better diving as does Malaysia and Indonesia.
Thanks for giving me a good laugh (along with everyone else's responses). I needed that while I'm bored at work this afternoon. I've been to Bonaire 3 times and we'll be taking our 4th trip in February of 2013 (well, it will be my husband's 5th). We'll be going with 2 other divers....one who has been there 3 times and one who hasn't been there. We'll also be meeting up with a larger group of people (10 in all) with a mix of # of visits between them with the one with the most having over 20 visits to the island and who has been all over the world shooting for diver magazines and Bonaire is still his favorite place.
Same story...different dance. All I can say to you is PLEASE!! Get off your horse and quit trying to draw attention to yourself. I've been to other places and the diving in Bonaire is just as good if not better. And we were there this past February and the coral even looked better than the February before. The least amount of vis we had on any given day was 65 feet and it was usually closer to 80 feet with some days up towards 100 feet. Oil Slick, 1000 Steps, Old Blue (Tolo) and Karpata on the north end looked awesome. Other divers said the sites at the park were better than they had been in the last 5 years and looked just awesome.
As for crime/theft...it sure as hell is better than Chicago or even Madison, WI!!! In all the trips we've been there, I've never once left anything in the vehicle that I didn't care about losing. That's why we bring cheap flip flops, sunglasses, hats, and covers (shirts/shorts) with us and wouldn't cry IF anything had ever beens stolen. The worst story I ever heard was someone getting their beer stolen. We even left our dive equipment in the back of our truck in Rincon while dining at Rosie's and had no issues!!
As to the food, it is a heck of a lot cheaper than dining in downtown Chicago and about as expensive as dining in Milwaukee or Madison, WI. Do you come from a small town? Then it sure as heck is more expensive. The food is good...not great (well, Wil's has great food). Agree with the comment about getting the mixed grill (or as we call it, the "meat platter") at Casablanca. You can feed yourself for 2 days (2 people) on that thing and it's cheaper than anywhere in the states. If you hit up a grocery store right off the bat and eat lunches and maybe one meal in your room, you can save a lot as well.
Now I ask...have you even BEEN to Bonaire or did you just hear some stories from people and are now just making assumptions? Or are you the same person that was banned before?
I've been on other dive vacations and lots of other plain vacations...Bonaire is my favorite place to go...it truly lives up to it's title: Diver's Paradise. I'll be going back...

Oh, also wanted to mention this guy Rich in MI who does a weekly podcast on diving (some great stuff). Anyway, he recently did a podcast on Bonaire and talked about how it was one of his best diving experiences in awhile (and this guy dives a lot). If you scroll down, he did a live podcast from Bonaire and then the week following (5/1 and 5/8):
