As has been said. Take any chart or guess you want, get in the water and do it. Bring a buddy and some extra weight and establish the correct amount. Then play with placement to get your trim right.

Padi AWO has a chart in the book to get you in the ball park, but you probably will be over weighted.:D

A number of variables here of course so general guidelines are just that. I found when I changed from my well-tattered Seaquest to my new Tilos wetsuit that I needed an extra three pounds just to descend wit the same ease as previously.

Lots of agencies and lots of formulas however this is a topic where the dependant factor is mainly the individual and his or her gear. Proper weighting should be covered in the OW class although it is rumored that many instructors will overweight students intentionally to keep them on the bottom.

The truth is, if a student is weighted properly they should have no trouble staying on the bottom with a deflated BCD and a full tank. A good exercise is to get a bunch of weights and get in a pool and try them out. You want to be neutral with a near empty tank.

I add 4 lbs for saltwater and this has been generally successful.

Good luck getting it right,

Here's a chart I posted before, that gives a good starting point.

Of course, you'll have to fine tune, but ya gotta start somewhere, right?

Ok, I was doing the (appropriate!) forum searches before posting here, this thread seemed the best of all for info I could find.

I dove a few weeks ago in beautiful 82 deg water. Im from New England, this of course meant, no wetsuit at all. :) Well, I'm going diving again in tropical waters in mid feb, and since 'Im going to get in the water a LOT more this trip, I picked up a 3 mil suit (Henderson goldcore if it matters). Its a full suit, size large. From what I can gather from the charts on this thread, I should add about 7-10 pounds of weight to what I dove with last month, to stay equally bouyant this time out?

I had 10 pounds diving without a suit (but I think I could have lowered that, just didn't have the options to get it easy - was a fast style resort boat dive, they just wanted us in and out of the water quick). So, I'm trying to decide if I can try 15 pounds, and get away with it, or am I just gonna sit there on the surface looking silly :)

I add 6 lbs when going from no suit to a 3 mil, your suit is probably different. The only way to know is to do a weight check in the water.

i way over 220 pounds and i use 8 kgs or 16 pounds when i dive
