Brian Lewis Smith, of Indiana, had been missing since the overnight hours of Saturday morning at Lake Keowee.
Smith, his father, and siblings arrived in Oconee County to visit his grandparents, who live near where Smiths body was found.
Smith was last known to be alive when he spoke to an ex-girlfriend at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday.
The coroner said that Smith made comments during the call suggesting that he might harm himself on or near the lake.
The paddle boat he was believed to be using was found adrift downwind from the last known point of contact later that morning, the Oconee County Emergency Management said.
The rescuers were using dive operations, boat searches and a scent dog to find Smith.
On Sunday morning, the sheriff's office used its helicopter to search from the air.
A resident of the Keowee Harbours development near Salem spotted the body and called authorities at about 7:40 am.
The coroner said the body was found in advanced decomposition, but had no visible sign of injuries. An autopsy will be performed on Tuesday.
