I can stay fit a lot of other, safer ways.
I used to swim in the springs every day until they closed them due to Hurricane Helene damage. I haven't been on a bike in decades, but I do know the dangers. I often have to deal with drunken boaters when I'm out diving, or on my kayak. They are a-holes. I refuse to let them control my life. Recovering from major back surgery about four months ago, I am committed to getting stronger and more than fit for diving.

You can die on the couch, out of shape just as easily as you can die on a bike having fun. No, you won't get hurt on the couch, but it's not much of a life or death either.

Your post resonated with me, especially today.

Today would have been one of my older sister’s birthday … and she didn’t wake up in the morning. She had a stroke in her sleep. She was in a coma for a month or so and then passed. She is sorely missed. We are all still processing her passing.

The grim reaper comes for each of us, often when we least expect him. ☹️

I'm so sorry for your loss.

The goal is to postpone that visit for as long as possible. I'd like to make a dive for my 100th birthday. I've got to be fit for that to happen and dive safely. Ergo, it's important to learn how others have died, so I can avoid their mistakes.

Thinking about the OP, I've been river fossiling a few times. One really was intense as the flow was so, so high. We were just below a narrows, and while the fossiling was productive, I remember losing my reg once, and the mask flooding a couple of times.

@DandyDon, you do have a morbid fascination with Scuba fatalities … do you dive too ? Or do all these accidents stop you from dipping below the surface?

BTW: Where’s the next eclipse?
If anything is morbid, it's this comment on a thread about a man who lost his life.

This was a person who had friends and family who loved him. I happened to see this on FB today

Dandydon is good people. His posts and diligence finding accident articles remind us as divers that even a small accident can lead to a catastrophic result.

Everyone deals with death a bit differently. Everyone.
