The search for the missing diver in Blausteinsee is over: special divers have found the body of a man. It is likely that this is the 56-year-old who has been missing since Sunday, but it has not yet been officially confirmed.

The search for the missing diver, who did not return from a dive in Eschweiler Blausteinsee on Sunday, was completed on Tuesday afternoon. And for a sad reason: special divers have found the body of a man. It is obvious that the lifeless person who was recovered from the artificial lake north of the Dürwiß district of Eschweiler at around 1 p.m. is the missing person, but has not yet been officially confirmed. According to the police, an autopsy should provide final certainty.

On Tuesday morning around 10 a.m., the police diving squad from Cologne and Wuppertal resumed the search for the 56-year-old man from the Ruhr area. Five boats were on the water that morning. A large contingent of fire departments, THW and police, supported by private diving enthusiasts, had been in action since Sunday after an emergency call was received by the fire department at 11.07 a.m. When the 56-year-old, who was part of a diving group, did not show up after the dive, his colleagues immediately made an emergency call.

The police then resumed the search on Monday morning - with special divers from Cologne and Wuppertal. The specialists from the North Rhine-Westphalia Police Technical Operations Unit searched for the missing man for around six hours using three boats and sonar devices. But again without result.

The main difficulty for the search parties was probably the low visibility in the lake. As a rule, this is around two meters in Blausteinsee. The low water temperature of just six degrees also makes the search difficult.

Blausteinsee has already made headlines several times. A diver was found dead here in 2017 and a female diver in 2019.

Blausteinsee was once a popular body of water among divers. Stories are told by up to 100 divers in one day. “In the last 15 years this has decreased significantly,” said the chairman of the Aachen diving club, Florian Dettmar, to our newspaper. The reason: said poor visibility, which, according to Dettmar, can even be less than one meter on certain days.
